A Helpful Machine.
Tho utilization of machinery for ap¬
parently trifling purposes, is carried to
a great extent, especially in great fac¬
tories where the w:isto of trifles would
foot up to an enormous total. A strik¬
ing exemplification of this is a littlo
machine recently put ia operation in an
up-towu cigarette factory.
As all cigarette makers know, dam¬
aged wrappers will creep in among the
good ones, and a certain or uncertain
number will get damaged iu handling.
Tho wrappers arc, of course, useless,
but tho contents is valuable, and to
strip off the wrappers by hand is a
tedious job, costing almost as much as
the tobacco is worth.
The new machine is very simple, con¬
sisting of a tube about half an inch in
diiim :tor and eighteen inches long, hav¬
ing a longitudinal slit in it in which re
volvc3 a keen, circular knife. Through
the tube runs a tape or narrow b It on
which the damaged cigarettes aro laid.

cut from end to end. Passing along on
the belt the cigarette is thrown into a

The closing of another refinery at
Boston, Mas , by the sugar trust indi¬
cates that it is the policy of the trust to
supply the the Eastern market from it3 plant The
in vicinity of New York city.

West has undertaken in the same way to
concentrate its produc ing plant in Peoria,
and has closed many distilleries in other
cities. It appears that although the two
sugar refineries in Philadelphia that have
not entered the trust are compelled material, to
pay more than the trust for raw
they undersell the trust by one-eightli of
a cent. The trust will undoubtedly re¬
new its efforts to bring these refineries
into the ring. If it should succeed, it
would have no formidable opponent ex
cept Claus Spreckels, and liis new re¬
finery at Philadelphia, Pa., eaunot he in
opetation before next Summer.
