MAKING CLOAKS. I

In these days when well fitting, stvl
ish, comfortable cloaks and jackets of
good materials may be bought for very
little money, compared with the prices
of cloaks of materials that may be more
costly, but not more stylish in cut, the |
wonder is that the styles are not more
varied. The styles are more varied
than those of the outer garments for
men. but hundreds of cloaks of the
same pattern may be seen in tire streets
any day.
Cloak? and jackets are garments on
which women cans: >t shovz much orig

they cor. on dresses, and the styles are,
therefore. fixed by the designers em
p.oyed by manufacturers. In many in
stance:, the style depends on the mate
rial to be used, as it would be useless
to design a style with many puffs and
folds for thick and heavy material.
Besides, if a style be good it, is accept
able to many women, no matter whetli
er it be unsuitable to their figures or
out. of harmony with the rest of their
is istuines.
In making cloaks, where the demand
may be sometimes for 500 of a certain
style, each piece of cloth is thoroughly
examined by experts in regard to meas
ure, texture and color, and then it is
sponged hv machinery made especially
for that purpose. All smooth cloths
an-i those with finished faces tire
sponged bv copper rolls, and the ma¬
chinery is so-arranged that from ,he time
the cloth starts to go over the roils until
it is folded dry it i not touche * by the
operator. The cloth is then ready for
the cutters, with ali its imperfections
marked. Each cutter has a separate
check or .• Well have behn entered the
particulars about the cloth, style and
proper patterns. If tile quantity be
large enough for tijp cutt'ug machine
it is marked and laiirin fold-, but. small
pieces arc cut by hand with .hears.
After the cloth has been cut aeeord
iiigtothe provided patterns tire bundles
are carefully compared with tie orders,
and then a ticket is made for witch gar¬
ment. on which is a place for each
worker to put his or he ^Limber, so

For the detection of any ; .r-sibic mis¬
takes and imperfections in the fit, the
garments are tried oil figures before be
ing sent to tlie trimmers. The collars,
cuffs, facings, etc., of each garment are
cut according to the style designed, and
with the main part of a garment sent
to a workman who particularly excels
in a certain style. After leaving the
finisher the garment is inspected again
by the foreman, and if it lie not satis¬

I’a,i " G-t a Free Dinner.
At many of the restaurants in Boston
a metal check, very much like a silver
quarter, is given by the waiter to the
customer as a ticket of what he has to
pay. A simple minded Irishman, who
had just arrived in Boston from Tip
penny, going into a well known resfau
rant on Washington street, called for
dinner. '■ lien riio waiter had brought
it lie laid down the metal counter.
Paddy, astonished, said to himself.
"Be jabers, this is the land for me;
when a man asks forsome dinner, they
give him a bit of money besides."
When lie bad swallowed his meal.
Hie delighted Paddy started to leave
the restaurant without settling with
the cashier, when lie was stopped by
the waiter with, “Hallo! where’s your
money—are you going without pay
“Why would ye be after giving me
the bit of money, at all, if ye meant to
take it away i^gain? Take yer dirty
money! Perhaps ye’ll be after wisliiu
me to return me dinner to ye again?"
So saying, Paddy threw the metal
jlieck down on the counter and march
?d off in a state of virtuous indignation,
leaving the waiter and proprietor staud
ing in a most amazed manner.—Boston
