In fchecaseof St .te against John Hannawa\ tor a*sault with to rape, the law has taken its course and John has received the limit of the law in such cases, which is 20 years of hard labor in the State penitentiary. The crime of this fiend, ot assault and at tempted rape upon the person of an innocent, lovely white school girl within four miles of Dooly s capitol, is familiar to our readers, The people were justly incensed and strong talk of a lynching pre vailed for a time, but cool heads and a call of an extraordinary session of the Superior Court by Judge Littlejohn prevented this double crime and as a result within one week after the crime was committed and within three hours after court bad convened, justice had been meted out to the criminal and an example fur nished worthy of emulation by any other county, and a practical demonstration given of the fact that the blackest crime is amply provided for by the laws of Geor gia. Judge Littlejohn short, pointed gave charge a the concise and to grand juty and a charge that was eagerly listened to and approved by all in attendance upon the court, the court room being judge well filled with spectators. The said that he had no apology to make nor was it his object in calling to ap- the pease sentimentality although he had extra session, and the victim, great sympathy and friends, for he only relatives ex ercised that right of discretion allowed him by law of adjourning of one court for the purpose con vening in extraordinary session another, when in his judgment the ends of justice could be better met by so doing and the crime com mitted warranted. The grand jurors went to their room, prompt ly returned a bill for ‘ ‘assault with mtent to rape” against John Han naway, who immediately plead guilty and received the above maximum punishment. Littlbjohn then took occasion to return thanks to the people of Dooly county for allowing the law to take its course and said that he had always held to the view that the law was ample to provide for Everybody fto^iy’connty for the example.** seemed to be satis fied and a feeling of relief seemed to exist in the minds of all at the termination and outcome of this ^the There was no half idiot and criminal, John Hannaway, but there were some expressions of condemnation for many who have j n the past teased and picked at John, thus causing him to feel i His “self-importance” » n feel as “ a nriviWod nhamcte 1 ” r Would not Sufler no Again for Fifty Times its Price.
