boy drowned in gum creek
Thought by Some to Have Met Foul
Play, But No Proof to be Had.
Last Tuesday afternoon the dead
body of a 18-year-old negro boy
was found in Gum creek near the
city pumping foul station. From all
appearance play caused death,
the boy bearing evidence of same
on his head and one or two places
on his body. The coroner’s jury,
However, could not find any clue
to foul play, and finally returned
a verdict of accidental drowning.
The bov’s name Bethel, was Albert, the
son of John a brick mason.

I awoke last night with severe
pains in my stomach. I never felt
so badly in all my life. When 1
came down to work this morning
I felt so weak I could hardly work.
I went to Miller – McCurdy’s
drug store and they recommended
Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera aud
Diarrhoea Remedy. It worked
like magic and one dose fixed me
all right. It certainly is the finest
thing I ever used for stomach
trouble. 1 shall not be without it
in my home hereafter, for I should
not care to endure the sufferings
of last night again for fifty times

The Cordele
Congressman Lewis in Cordele.
Congressman E. B. Lewis was
in Cordele Tuesday and Wednes
day of this week taking in the
Chautauqua ing and incidentally shak
hands with friends. He gave
the Sentinel a pleasant call. Mr.
Lewis was looking unusually well
as if he didn’t care who or how
many oppose him for congress.
He has many warm friends in
Cordele who were glad to see him
and shake his hand.

CHAUTAUQUA CLOSES TO-DAY
Tha Third Annual Session a Success.—
Many Visitors Present.
The third annual session of the
Cordele Chautauqua • Association
closes today. The session has been
a successful one. Many visitors
have taken in the chautauqus, and
about one hundred teachers have
been in attendance upon the
institute so ably managed»by Prof.
Euler B. Smith and other leading
educators. Over $700 was taken
in Sunday, which guarantees suc
cess financially. Sam Jones al
ways draws a ciowd and never dis
appoints them. His sermon Sun
day, and especially Sunday night
“was a corker,” and what he did
to city officials and particularly our
superior court, judge “was a plen
ty.” He hit for Representative being democrat, Tracy
a hard lick a
and, in fact, he said‘‘Cordele didn’t
have a man in town,” “that we
were born half man and half dog,
had starved the man and fed the
dog.” Abotft the time Mr. Jones
was using this expression a dog
happened on the stage and Mr.
Jones remaked that “he supposed
the dog was hunting a man; that
he couldn’t find one in the audi
ence and had to come up on the
stage.” Mr. Jones was certainly
at his best and his sermons were
full of wit, pathos and “hard
licks.”
The program for the week, prin
ted in The Sentinel heretofore,
was very good, with one or two
exceptions. The Orchestra, com
posed of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Pate,
Miss Essie Harris, Mr. P. H. Willis
and three gentlemen from Macon,
furnished magnificent music. The
Macon trio was very fine. Miss
Napier gave splendid recitations.
Prof. Smith’s lectures were fine.
Ji o. A. Sibley on Cuba was good.
T|ie celled Abbott itself Spratlin Monday Literary night, Club and
v
feature of this entertainment
was good. The trio’s matinee at
the Suwanee Hotel Wednesday
afternoon was enjoyed by many.
The ventriloquism was not so
good, and the fling of the Hornet
trying to inject politics into the
Chautauqua fell flat. Dr. Brough
ton of Atlanta was at his best
IJKrtetrfifari.ViT!; good lecture
ventriloquist yesterday, and the
held the fort last
night. Prof. Bradley will lecture
this morning, and the grand con
cert will take place tonight.
