MANUFACTORY, MAKE SIGNS.
To be Established in Gardele at an Early
Date.—Plattering Prospects.
Some weeks ago The Sentinel
stated that a printery contemplated
placing machinery in some suita
ble locality in South Georgia, to
print signs, small and large, on
various kinds of material—wood,
‘oiAaloth, oiled board, also making
signs on gold, nickel, brass,
enamel and colored card board.
In that, article it was suggested
that no more suitable location
could be selected than in Cordele.
Mr. W. T. Christopher, of this
county, and Mr. 0. E. Christo
pher, cf Richmond, Va., have de
cided that this is the best place
and will, sometime in October,
open the factory for business.
And Cordele still grows!

Dog-gone Good Jump,
Last Sunday afternoon while
some young men were on the
second story veranda of the school
ouilding, a pointer dog belonging
to Dick Taylor, had followed the
young gentlemen, decided to go
down by the nearest route without
the aid of a parachute, so he made
a jump to the ground. The dog
is limping about, and doubtless
he will not want to make another
^such jump soon.

Farmers, Here’s a (Jure Tor Rust,
A Bibb county farmer tells of a
sure way to cure rust. This is his
suggestion in correcting land:
“Green cotton seed and peavines
make about the best fertilizers
that we can get in this country.
Peavines plowed under will pre
vent rust on the land.” he says.
“Several years ago I was manag
ing one of Col. Henry Lamar’s
plantations for him. We had
some very strong hammock land
on an island in the river. It was
in the habit of rusting everything
that grew on it. We planted it in
wheat one fall, and the next spring
I planted it in peas. It made the
finest peas I ever saw. I turned
them under with big two-horse
plows just about the time thepeas
were filling out. We never had
any more trouble with rust. The
next season I made more than a
bale of cotton to the acre, and
never did we again hear of rust.”
Farmers’ Excursion to Savannah.
What is claimed to be the last

run September 25th at $2 for the
round trip from Cordele. This is

o’clock Monday morning, Septem

THE SCHOOL BOARD TALKS.
It is Not The Board’s Intention to “Sell
Out" the Eights of the People
To the eitizent of CordeU:
Feeling it the duty of the school
board to advise the public as to
the status of affairs in connection
with the rebuilding of the school
bouse since the Hornet has, by its
remarks, “Don’t Auction Off the
School Building,” publicly inti
mated that it is the desire of the
board to locate the new school
house on a site that would be se
cured by the highest bidder, there
by thwarting the will of the citi
zens signing a petition requesting
the the choice of a site by popular
vote, we wish tostate that there
are now only a few dollars in the
school treasury available as a
building fund and the board some
time back made requisition on the
city for $5,000 to rebuild a school
house with request that prompt
consideration be given the matter
and reported as early as possible
to the board. As yet the school
board has not been advised by city
council that necessary funds are
available to start th9 new building,
and as soon as the board is advised
of this fact, we can assure the citi
zens that some immediate action
will be taken toward providing a
new and suitable school house.
Provide funds first and then the
matter of location will speedily
follow. We have not in any meet
ing officially discussed the site for
a school building, as the city now
owns a school site, and the change
of location would only be made in
case of material advantage revert
ing to the citizens and tax-payers
of the city.
We will state that the petition
of citizens requesting the choice
of location by popular vote was
lengthily and respectfully discus
sed, and members of the board
deemed it the best interest of the
city not to call an election for this
purpose, whereby possibly our
city might again be disgracefully
advertised by bitter and unfriend
ly contests, and possibly engender
much bad feeling among now ex
esting friends. [Signed],

SCHOOL OPENS NEXT MONDAY
i
Soma Things of Interest at the School
Board Meeting Last Monday.
The Gorddle Public Schools will
open next Monday, Sept. 4th, at
the temporary quarters provided
by the School Board, in the two
story 9 room dwelling on lot 7,
block 2, known as the O. J. Shipp
house, and the same kind of dwel
ling on lot 4, block 3, known as
the W. A. Hawkins house. Both
houses are close together and on
the block just north of theG. <fc A.
freight depot. The temporary
quarters are ample to seat all pu
pils who attend and they will be
made comfortable. The teachers
are all on hand ready for work
and the Board expects a full and
prompt entrance.
THB SCHOOL BOARD MEETING.
The School Board meeting at
the office of Dr. H. B. Roberts last
Monday afternoon and evening,
while perfectly harmonious, was
nevertheless full of earnest dis
cussion both by the members and
by outside citizens.
The board transacted some
routine business, It accepted the
resignation as a member, of Presi
dent Jno. E. Howell, expressing
regrets that he resigned and
thanks for the able manner in
which he presided and performed
his duties while a member of the
board.
Vice-President H. B. Roberts
was then unanimously elected to
the presidency, and Mr. R. L.
Wilson to the vice-presidency.
Some matters of more or less
importance with reference to tem
porary quarters for opening school
next Monday were discussed and
disposed ot.
The main question before the
board which was discussed more
or less all the while during the
two hours afternoon and three
hours night sessions and upon
which but slow progress, to say
the least, was made, was that of
a new school building. The board
had voted that a new one should
be built rather than undertake to
repair the old, ivhen Mr. A. J.
Comer presented the board with
a petition containing the names
of 104 citizens asking that
location of a site for the building
be left to a vote of the white peo
ple of Cordele. This petition was
not to be lightly considered and
the merits and demerits of a vote
by the people was eloquently dis
cussed by logical speakers both
from the members of the board
and visiting citizens. By a vote
of 4 to 1 the petition was tabled.
The one who voted for the peti
tion, did so because he could not
conscientiously over-ride the re
quest of 104 citizens. The four
who voted against the petition
or in favor of tabling it did so for
many stated reasons. They
thought the board should assume
the duty of locating the building,
should avoid the bitter feeling
liable to be engendered in a hot
fight at the polls, to steer clear of
politics iu the school, to avoid the
delay and expense incident to an
election, etc.
Messrs. B. B. Pound and J. C.
Tracy were present with a sealed
business proposition to locate the
building on block 86, which is on
the west side of the G. S. <fc P.
railroad, the present location be
ing on the east side. In present
ing their proposition Messrs.
Pound and Tracy, both for selves
and parties they represented, ex
pressed their confidence in the
ultimate decision of the board and
stated they would be satisfied at
whatever the board decided upon.
The proposition has been kept
quiet by the board, and, without
further action, the board ad
journed until a future meeting.
