VOL. THREE DESTRUCTIVE FIRES. Estimated That More Than $10,000.00 Worth of Property Destroyed Last Saturday morning at about 2:30 o’clock the blowing of whis tles and the ring of the fire bell awaked and alarmed our people. A discovery had been made that a conflagration of no small di mension was making rapid head way in the blacksmith and wheel wright shops of Messrs. Morris <fc Parkerson. The ever faithful fire department promptly turned out but the consuming flames bad spread so rapidly that the blaze was soon lapping over to the Rougliton cigar factory; the old warehouse formerly used by Wight – Weslosky Co.; then on to the cotton warehouse occupied and operated by Harris – James, and the two store buildings be longing to J. A. Dixon. The losses at this fire are as follows: Morris – Parkeraon, loss $1,000; insurance $500. Building was by E. Fisher. Fisher’s loss on building $400; insurance on same $300. Z. H. Houghton’s loss $4,000, insurance $2,250. J. A. Dixon’s loss $1,200, with no insurance. W. R. Harris’ loss $600, in surance $500. Coney – Co.’s loss on cotton in warehouse, $300, covered by in surance. G. 8. – F. Railroad, cars, cross ties, etc., $500. Fully insured. Electric Light Company, lamps, poles, wire, etc., $200. No in surance. Sunday evening at a little after six o’clock another alarm of fire was sounded, and upon investiga tion the fire was found to be located in the residence of Mr. Will Thornton. Much of the con tents of the building were con sumed by the flames, and though the house was totally destroyed, the fire laddies did noble work in saving the residence occupied by Mr. F. H. Bland, as that building was only 8 or 10 feet distance from the Thornton house. The loss of Mr. Thornton is somewhere near $1,100, with $900 insurance. On Monday morning at eleven o’clock the fire companies were again called out. This time the fire was discovered in the stable of Mr. Aycock, just between and near the Cordele Sash, Door – Lumber Co’s, plant and the Stan dard Oil Company’s warehouses, in the stable was stored hay and other dry stuff and ’though com paratively small the fire was ex ceedingly hot. The stable was burned to the ground, and the fire companies did hard work in saving the oil company’s build ings. Origin of the fire not known. A TEXAS WONDER. Hall’s Great Discovery. Ths Kind You Have Always Bought Bears the Signature of FRIDAY. OCTOBER 6, 1890. THE PROPOSED CARNIVAL. Will be Profitable to Oordele and Interesting to Visitors. The proposed carnival for Cor dele, now being worked up by Prof. Erhart, and which he pro poses to pull off about the middle of November, will prove more profitable to o.ir people than first glance at this gigantic movement would seem to indicate. Although the movement seems to be a la borious one, yet, with a little concerted action on the part of our people the expense will be small compared with the benefits to be derived. Several Cordele citizens who at first doubted the advisabil ity of the undertaking are now firmly convinced that the carnival should be held, and from present prospects it will be held, and such an one as will be a drawing card for hundreds and thousands of visitors. Cheap railroad rates are anticipated for the visitors, and the fact that all the show will be free and worth seeing is sufficient intimation that for three days the people of Wiregrass Georgia will mix and mingle togethor upon the streets of Cordele. Although Cordele is smaller than some other towns giving carnivals, yet she never does things by halves, but generally “goes the whole thing or nothing,” and the proposed carni val will second to none of the car nivals given by other places. We would like to elaborate on some of the features, some of the buildings and floats mapped out by Prof. Erhart, but suffice at this time to Bay that most all of these are entirely new and different from any ever given at any other carnival. Work will probably start within t wo or three days, or as soon as Prof. Erhart is assured that he can meet with success, and of this be is now practically as sured. A POOR WORKER. No man or woman can work well, mentally or physically, nor kind per form effective service of any who is burdened with a torpid liver. Constipation and deficient secretion of bile have clogged up the organs of the bo'dy so that they cannot keep up the energy to the proper standard, hence, weariness, headaches, depression, fickle ap petite result. All this can be changed with a few doses of Prickly Ash Bitters. It cleanses the system thoroughly, flushes the excretory canals, drives out im purities, imparts new life to the vital organs and re-establishes healthy functional activity, which brings with it energy, strength, vigor of body and brain and cheer ful spirits.
