CUllA.
It is no question in our mind but
that the annexation of Cuba
in the long run, ho the best for the
islands and for Uncle Sam, but
but taking into consideration the
Declaration of Independence and
the professions of the president and
congress, we cannot put too much
pressure on the Cubans. We cun
not deal with the islands in such a
way as to invite criticism iroui the
outside world and cause the world
to say that our declarations for hu
manity were cloaked motives of ag->
grandisement.
We must act, fair and square with
Cuba, and help the people to their
feet again, and after doing all we
can, and seeing that she can t stand
the test, annexation will then be
inevitable, but we must be positively
sure that the test is bona fide and
thorough, and continued, until al
doubts of our sincerity in the mat
ter is squelched.
New Government Jluilding.
There is no good reason why the
bill now pending in the National
congress for a government postoffice
building in Cordele should not be
come a law. The fact that the su
pervising architect of the treasury
department has this week made in
quiry of Postmaster Hall as to the
cost of location and for other in
formation in reference to the erec
tion of such a building, is encour
aging,
If our congressman could succeed
in showing, what appears to us to be
an almost absolute necessity, that
there should be a southern division
of the Southern District of the
United States Court in Geor
gia, it would, in our opinion,
greatly aid the passage of the bill to
erect the building in Cordele.
The arguments in favor of creat
ing this new division nre strong and
good ones. People who live in the
Southwestern edge of the Eastern
Division of the Southern District,
and those who live at an equal dis
advantage in the Western Division
of the Southern District, are cotm
pelled to travel hundreds of miles
to reach Savannah or Macon, re
spectively. These people should not
labor at such a disadvantage, and
there should be a Southern Division
of the Eastern District, of this court.
The saving in expenses to the
government would be enormous and
alone is sufficient argument to cre
ate the new division.
Figure us you may, or will, and if
such a new division is created, Cor
dele is the geographical center and
the only proper place to hold this
court. With the new Southern Di
vision created, and Cordele selected
as the proper location for the court,
the proper authorities will appropri
ate sufficient funds to erect a com
modious building for the purpose of
holding tlie United States Court and
for postoffice purposes.
Of course Cordele would be thank
ful for the postoffice building alone,
if one can be secured, but the crea
tion of the court spoken of would
make the building a certainty, and
the scheme is an altogether plaustw
ble one.
