IlOlTiI.K LAUREL, HACK
ACTION.
That was a double barrel, back ac
tion shot at ihe Sentinel which op
peared . in the , V ienna Progress _ , last
week about our article of the week
before in which we called the Pro
gress, in its anxiety to work against
Cordele’s just right to a city court,
“a great brain,” “a brain capable of
figuring out only twenty-eight court
cases from Cordele per annum,
against one hundred and eighty
cases from the balance of the
county.”
The reply In last week’s Progress
is “double barrel,” in that .Judge D.
L. Henderson, our good judge of the
county iv..rt, ; do the contro
versy.
It is “back action” in that the
Progress retreats from its “28 to
180 themv ” and is content to aban
don that theory altogether and take
exception, or rather show some ten,
per at the Skntinei, setting the
gross bad brains.
“Our brains,” says the Progress,
IS NOT SO VERY LARGE; IP IT WERE
LARGER, WE IIAVk’nt ANY TO BRAKE.
BUT ANY KOOL, IT SEEMS, COULD ASK
SUCH QUESTIONS ON ‘SUCH KABY SUB
JECTS.” “Fools can ask questions
BUT IT TAKES BHILOSOPHKRS TO AN
SWER THEM.” WE 8URR0SK THE REA
SON APPARENT WHY THEY WERE NOT
ANSWERED.”
While this is a complete dodge by
the Progress of the real questions,
we pause long enough to remark,
brother, that since you are so free to
acknowledge that you have no
“brains’, to spare, we are not pro
pared to dispute it, but so far as our
being fools isjeoncerned, we are sure
you are as badly off as is your “28
to 180 theory. » >
But the Sentinel feels flattered at
so much attention, and naturally
concludes that, there was at least
some merit in what wo hail to say.
We feel especially fluttered that
Judge Henderson stfould join in the
discussion. We really like Judge
Henderson. He is a good man.
why he writes, wo don’t exactly
know. The Sentinel made no fling
at the county court, the judge, the
solicitor and other officers thereof,
but, gentlemen, you must not allow
our able contemporary,the Progress,
to be so careless in fighting a city
court for Cordele as to nso what
purports to lie, a county court,
ord of only 28 cases from Cordele, to
180 cases from the balance of the
county, when no Hnch record exists,
and then expect the Sentinel to re*
main quiet. You must be wholly
just, fair and unselfish, brother,
fore you can expect the Sentinel to
be quiet when yon call our people
“unjust,” gain.” “unfair” We and only for
«l selfish want to ask
Progress t wo questions:
1. Did you premeditate to
the peop’e of Dooly county when
you said: “Thus the city court judge
of Cordele would be paid $500
trying 28 cases, and the county court
judge $650 for trying 180 cases.
2. Didn ’t von know when you ad
vanced the “28 to 180 theory” that
147cases from Cordele, this year,
had been filed in, or transferred to
the county court , besides those in
the superior court?
Will the Progress please answer
these two questions and extricate
itself from the embarrassing posi
lion it seems now to occupy in its
fight against the city court for Cor
dele, a court, unanimously voted
by the Cordele Board of Trade ,whioh
has about seventy odd members,
and which membership are consci
entious in what they think Cordele
of right, ought to have.
In conclusion, we desire to thank
Judge Henderson for his article.
The judge is, no doubt, right in ex
plaining the 127 cases transferred to
I is court last spring from the supe
- , ir court, and why S3 of the same
> still pending. We know Judge
Ijjnderson has given the facts, and
wp commend bun for it. But, oh!
what a broad side load he fired into
■the Progress’ ‘*28 to 180 theory.”
Judge Henderson says 143 cases
from Cordele this year in his, the
county court, to say nothing of the
superior court cases, the city court
should take obarge of. The Pro
ip'eRs said 28. Which do you be
lieve? We believe the judge.
Brooms, buckets, tubs, clothes
baskets, churns, washboards nnd
rope, all trust products, have ad
vnnced in cost 25 per cent.
