In Kentucky every man is either
running for office or running for his
life.
It some times happens that while
a man is watching his enemies his
friends get the host, of him.
A few remarks from Mr. Debs on
the Kentucky situation might not
lie Tacking in interest.
Rev. Mr.Broughton should frankly
express regret at. the interpretation
put upon his words and desist.
If Uncle Joe Wheeler wants to
fight real had he can perhaps get a
job in vhe front ranks from Paul
Kruger.
Heart-purity supports, adorns and
sweetens life under all conditions
and in all time-therefore it is most
important.
To many of the busiest, the word
“home” means no more than n mis
placed hyphen between “going” and
“coming.”
The Prsident. should appoint a
southern man on the Philippine com
mission by nil means. When the big
canal is built the South will he in
closer touch commercially with the
archipelago than any other part of
fchs country, and has as much or more
interest in the proper settlement of
the Philippine question than other
parts.
But. this view of it aside, impotent
as it. is, the South is a Component
part of this great country and should
always he recognized on occasions
of the kind under consideration.
There are numerous men in tne
South who are admirably fitted for
the work of the commission.—
Titnes-Recorder.
So much tact is required to get
along with some people that one only
has to suggest a plan the opposite of
which he desires to carry out.

trouble with its food. Well
babies are plump $ only the

CENTRAL POINT LETTER.
Farming operations are settling
down to bnsines, but the contin
ual agitation among the negroes
to go to Florida to tap turpentine
trees, and tanglefeet, is causing
much embarrassment on the
farms. However, most of the
planters are meeting the problem
with an early start and coats otf.
Central Point is discussing the
high prices of mules. The for
eign war demands, of course, run
the price up, but there is some
thing ahead more serious still.
If that continues much longer
our cotton will find no foreign
market, and there wiil be, if
there is a full crop planted this
year, a surplus made,* which
means 4 1-2 cent cotton. If the
farmers go wild as they did in
1808, buy on credit and plant
every spot in cotton, we will find
another 11,000,000 bale crop on
hand next fall, and no market for
it, and the whole country will be
It doe* seem that even a fool
might see that it. cost almost dou
ble the amount of money to make
and gather 11,000,000 bales of
cotton than it does 7 , 000,000
bales. Again, 7 , 000,000 bring a*
much money as 11,000,000 bales.
Brother farmer, lets quit the folly
of our ruinous ways this spring,
and plant one-third more corn
than cotton, and next spring we
will find
“Corn in the corn crib,
And butter on the board;
A big sack of coffee,
And sugar in the goard.”
I still hear lomn complaint
among the grumblers about the
boy and girl school teachers school not
doing good work in the charge
room. Friend, now don’t
such mistakes to our efficient
school superintendent. Don’t
you know that your vote put trus
tees in office to employ teachers
and to control them? Now, you
hu$h growling and wait patiently
until the time, (three years,) the al
lowed a trustee to serve on
board has expired, ami then go to
work and put in new and wiser
men, if you can find them.
1 hope, however, that you
will remember that it is not. your
school superintendent who is
wasting the state’s money, but it
is those men who employ the
teachers and then insist that the
superintendent contract with
them. There is a way to remedy
this. Give those men and women
who have the tact, the culture
and the experience in the schools.
If they teach two months in
twelve, instead of on* month in
six, that will be better for all
concerned.
Again, the teachers find that
the health of the children is bet
ter in the fall than in the spring.
Hetica the mind necessanlly must
be stronger,
It is rumored that ft bill will soon
be introduced in the Kentuoky leg
islature to prohibit the citizens of
that state from carrying more than
on a pist ol at a time.
