For each day a program replete
with interest has been arranged,
and if the weather is only favora

it is a fact, that no town the size

A New Racket Store.
Mr. A. P. Cohen, of New York,
was in Cordele last Tuesday and
rented the Webster store on 7th
street, preparatory to opening up
new “racket store.” He left
Wednesday for New York, and ,
Ins stock will arrive and be in
place to commence business first
of October.
Cordele is continually on the
up-grade, and we have the pleas
ure of welcoming one more enter
prise here—a “Racket Store to
be run by that New York man,
Mr. A. P. Cohen.

Two More Families,
We are pleased to note the fact
that Mr. Robert Wynne, of Rich
wood, was in the city this week
looking for a dwelling, preparing
to move his family to Cordele.
We are also pleased to note that
Mr. B. F. Windham of the city of
Albany, was in Cordele this week
for the same purpose. The health
of Mrs. Windham since she left
Cordele, some eight or ten months
ago, has been very bad, and Mr.
Windham stated that he hoped
that the move back to Cordele
would restore her to the same good
health she enjoyed for many years
while a resident of Cordele.
Both families are well known
in our city. Mrs. Wynne is a sis
ter to Messrs. Z. A. and J. A. Lit
tlejohn.
All the houses in the city are
filled and it seemed impossible to
that secure a dwelling, did but we trust
both parties secure one
into which to move, their
many friends will gladly welcome
REV. G. W. WHITTLE KILLED.
Met a Horrible Death From A Pine Tree
Falling on Him.
odd Key. a. W. Whittle, for forty
of Dooly years a good and quiet citizen
death IaBt county, met a horrible
about 4 o’clock Saturday afternoon at
from a pine tree
that, fell upon him.
Mr. Whittle, his wife and son
were out in the cotton pa tch pick
j ng cotton when the tree fell. The
wind was not blowing and little
was it expected that a tree would
fall, but suddenly and without
warning a tall, straight pine, fif
teen inches in diameter at the bot
tom, fell, the top of the tree strik
i"g Mr. Whittle a little to the
right and rear of the top of the
head, crushing his skull. He
never recovered consciousness be
fore he died at 7 o’clock. Doctors
G. W. Shipp and H. M. Smith, of
Cordele, were sent for and arrived
at the scene of the dying man be
fore death, but it was impossible
to do anything for the unfortunate
gentleman.
A very large crowd in the neigh
borhood soon arrived at the place
and did all they could to aid the
unfortunate situation . The de
ceased lived on the place of Mr. W.
H. Wright, near Penia. He was
about 02 years old, and a Primi
tive Baptist preacher. All who
knew him, knew him as a quiet,
good and peaceable citizen. Be
sides a large family that had mar
ried off, he left a widow and a 16
or tragic 18-year old son to mourn his
death. The remains were
interred last Monday morning at
9 o’clock in the Dowdy family
burying The ground.
Sentinel extends sympathy
to the bereaved family, relatives
and friends.
The Coming Vets Reunion.
The annual re-union of the
Georgia Confederate Veterans'
will be held at Augusta, Ga., No
vember 14, 15 and 16th, 1900.
The low rate of one cent per
mile for the Veterans and their
friends over all railroads in Geor
gia, will give the Veterans from
every section of the state an op
portunity bringing to assemble together,
their friends with them,
which keeps alive the memories of
NO. 10
DOOLY SUPERIOR COURT.
Devoid of Sensational Trials.—Has
Accomplished flood Deal of Work.
During the present term of
Dooly Superior Court, quite a
number of civil cases have been
disposed of, and a number yet re
main on the docket. Among the
the more important cases tried was
case of the Hutchinson Lum
ber and Supply Company vs. E.
W. Bulloch and A. Peacock, sur
viving partners of Bush, Rulloch
– Co., suit on note. The defend
ants plead non est factum, and
the jury remaining out three days
and nights a mistrial was declar
ed, the jury standing nine for the
defendants and three for the plain
tiff.
Another important case dispos
ed of was that of W. C. Hamilton
vs. Atlanta Homo Insurance Co.,
in which the plaintiff was non
suited.
A few other cases of minor im
portance were passed upon by the
jury, loose and the divorce mill turned
a number of ill-mated cou
ples.
docket Monday morning the criminal
was taken up, and “the
brother in black” has chiefly oc
cupied the attention of the court
tins week. The case of the state
vs. Robert Rains, charged with
murder, was nolle prosequied, and
the cases of the state vs. Downing
and Spradley, charged with mur
der, were continued for the term.
This week will probably see the
end of the term, during which
considerable business has been
disposed of, and very little said of
it. This court has been devoid of
sensational trials and lias accom*
plished a good deal of work.
Retrenchment and Improvement.
Under the head of “Retrench
ment,” the city fathers at their
last regular meeting disposed of
the services of Chief of Police
Cain, Superintendent of water
works Fisher, and Street Overseer
Killian. This is a reduction in
salaries of $120 per month, or
$1,440 per annum.
Under the head of “Improve
ment,” the bid and bond of Con
tractor W. D. Benson, to build the
water works station and reservoir
for the new artesian well, was ac
cepted, and work has been active
ly begun and will be pushed to
