I was riimiunting about this family
institution nud its great importance in
tiio world because I have been read
ing about it in the Apocrypha, which
as oiio of our family Billies. I heard
• preacher say once that a Bible with
»fce Apocrypha in it should not stay in
kis house. Well, it took 1,826 years
to exclude it from the Protestant Bi
ble, and most of it is in tho Roman
Catholic Bible yet.
What is called u sacred canon was
sol established until the sixteenth
eentury, and for centuries before that
•foaost. every great theologian had his
«** catalogue of inspired hooks as be
believed them. For 300 years only
b* of raid’s epistles were admitted.
Tl»« Book of St. James and tho Reve
lation of St. John were excluded. So
wise Esther and Daniel and Jonah in
tbeOld Testament. Luther tried to
b*ve Hebrews, and James, and Jude,
•awl the Revelations of St. John ex
dadeil, hut failed. But all differences
of opinion seem to have been harino
*«ed a* the council of Trent by all
Cfbristiaue and the Apocrypha was
tvfk in, not as tui inspired port, hut to
b« rend for religious instruction. In
RilC» it was excluded from tho Protes
tant Bible, but it remains in many of
itan old time family Bibles aud is in
one of mine.
I dare to peruse it sometimes, espe
cially “The Wisdom of Jesus the Son
of Siracb,” which is called Ecclesias
tiems, which lias fifty chapters aud is
•a full of maxims and morals and in
struction for tho family as arc the Pro
verbs of Solomon. Addison says that
if this hook had been left in the canon,
or if it had the name of some great
Greek philosopher, it would have
commanded the admiratiou of mau
kind To my mind it is the condensa
tion of wisdom for family government'.
It is as poiuted and pungent as any
thing that Solomon ever wrote. This
Jesus was a better man than Solomon.
Ho lived and wrote 300 years after
Maltic.hi, the last of the prophets. In
the close of his narrative concerning
Moses and the prophets he says of
Solomon: “Bv his body ho was
brought into subjection and didst stain
bin honor and pollute his seed nud
brought wrath upon his children, and
his kingdom was divided.”
I never did have a profound admira
tion for a mau who said, “Rejoice, oh,
young man, in the wife of thy youth ’4
»ud be thou always ravished with hei
love,” aud then goes off and marries
300 wives aud takes 700 concubines.
His precepts were good, but his exam
ple was l ad, very bad. My doctrine
has always been that a man has no
suore right to two wives than a woman
b*s to two husbands. Let him stand
by his marriage vows. This is the in
junction of Jesus, tho sou of Siracb.
As a sample of his wisdom let me
qti ote:

Whether this book be inspired or, j
not, it is full of devotion to God and
gratitude for His goodness. The Old
Testament Hebrews canon was made
up and closed before this Jesus lived,
or perhaps Ecclesiasticus would have
been embraced in it. It is certainly
entitled to as much consideration as
Solomon's Song, for there is not a vul
gar or lascivious expression in it.
This much about the Apocrypha will
answer some inquiries I have received,
two of them from preachers. I have
a long letter from my old.friend,Bishop
Turner, concerning that recent publi
cation of William Hannibal Thomas;
that bill of indictment against negroes J
of his own race. Ho denounces Thom
as. His opinion is that some learned
white man wrote the book and paid
Thomas for the use of his name.
says this is the opinion of those iu
South Carolina who know this scape
gallows. He says, “I am well ac
quainted with him; knew him during
the war in front of Richmond, where
some southern hero shot off one of his
arms, aud it is a pity he did not shoot
his head off. He is now receiving un
exhorbitaut pension from the United
States government. If thereover was
money paid to a dog, it is paid to him.
If the white people of the south knew
half as much about his rascalitv and
villainy as he has told me, they would
seek his blood. If our preachers are
so bad as he represents them, what did
he stop for ami join tho party of the
devil? Ho was one of the preachers
of my church and will be until hell
opens her arms to receive him,” etc.,
etc.
I have been following Bishop Tur
ner’s course ever since the war, and
have never known aught against him
as a man or a Christian. In the year
1S66, when our people at Rome were
under the oppression of a Spanish cap
tain, one De la Mesa, Bishop Turner
acted as a mediator and tried to make
our condition more tolerable. He
made a speech at Reese’s Spring, near
Rome, that we all commended, and
did his utmost to prevent that Spani
anl from exercising his foul dorniua
tion and tyranny. Ever since then
his pen and voice has been for peace

Tindall, as receiver for the Macon

short about six thousand dollars in
the funds entrusted to his care by tho
court, and when recently he could not
produce the money he was sent to jail
for contempt of court.
Tindall’s attorney argued before
Judge Lumpkin that his client is
illegally imprisoned in the Bibb jail.
The case has attracted great attention,
and the decision of Judge Lumpkiu
has been awaited with much public
interest. Judge Lumpkin, in a very
elaborate opiuioD, rules against Tin
dall, and directs that the prayer for
“A friend cannot be known in pros
perity, and an enemy cannot be hid in
adversity.”
“Use not much the company of a
woman who is a singer le3t tliou be
captured with her voice.”
“Rejoice not over thine enemy when
he is dead.”
“Lend not to who is higher than
iliyseif, but if thou lendest count it

“Sit not down with the wife of an
other man in thine arms, for it will
bring thee to destruction.”
“My son, help thy father in his old
the past week, in very short order,
aud the governor stated when the res
olution to that effect reached him, that
he would approve the action of the
board. This means that the company
will remain as it is at present.
The hoard made several recommend
ati vns of importance and of general in
terest to the military of the state.
Among the important recommenda
tions was that the maximum number
of arms, uniforms and other equip
ments supplied to the companies iu
the military service of the state be in
creesed to sixty. The number at pres
ent furnished is forty, and where it is
advisable the board thinks this should
be increased to sixty. There are many
companies in the state which have
more than forty members, and these,
of course, need more than forty guns
and more than forty uniforms.
Another important resolution rec
ommended a revision of the military
laws of the state. The governor is
urged to appoint a board of officers to
attend to this work. Tho military
laws, it is said, are in bad shape.
Some of them are obsolete and many
have been added since they were com
piled.
It was also recommended that all the
officers of the state be supplied with
Colt’s revolvers; that the troops be
supplied with blankets and overcoats
and that the Savannah Volunteer
Guards, now the First battalion,
heavy artillery, be furnished new
equipment to suit its present organi
zation and purpose.
Governor Candler was not prepared
to say what he would do with these
recommendations and will probably
pass upon them within a few days.
