Progress Mistaken.
The Vienna Progress, in last week.- ,
edition, takes the Sbntinei, to task. H
accuses this paper of gloating over its
inisforl line—the dest ruction of its plant
by fire on January 22nd. last—because
the Skntinkt, on March 16th., two
months alter t lie fire, claimed to have
published the grand jury presentments
two weeks before any other paper in
the county.
The Progress is mistaken in thus ac
cusing us and on the other hand should
have long since acknowledged expres
sions of sympathy from us, which we
always extend to the weak, and also
the strong, in hours of distress,
Just how the Progress can wait four
months after the fire, two months after
the publication of the grand jury pre
sentments. then streteh its fertile
imagination so as to charge such a (lag
gerous accusation as this, and have its
super-sensitive nat ure wrought upon to
an extent as above pointed out, is be
yond tiie comprehension of mortals
here below, especially when eminating
from a “specially called editor.”
On August 4th., Inst year, a falling
imperfect parapet wall smashed six
hundred pounds of type, cases, impos
ing stone etc. for the Sentinel. and yet
without one dollar of accident insur
ance it was ready after missing only
one week, to render superior service to
an anxious public-superior toany other
paper in the county.
On January 22 nd., this year, the Pro
gress was destroyed by lire, and with
H 2 t 0 . 0 Qof fire insnrance, four months
after the fire, namely, Thursday May
16th. 1001 ,announces that it. is “Ready
lo turn the corner wit h any other paper
In the county.”
The truth of the whole situation is

Pinehurst is better fixed than
any town in the county as evidenced
by the following facts:—There arc

having more than paid expenses
during the first quarter; a third
route will be established soon;
there is not a vacant store or dwol
ling in t he town; only t wo dwel
lings are owned by non-residents,
all other buildings are owned by
people living within the incorpor

town is paid for; in the there place; are there only
three renters
is not a mortgage on a piece ol’
property in the incorporation.
