Windy City, the bustling city—
the city with a destiny. Chicago
is famous on account ol many
things. Marshall Field, Seigel –
Cooper, Ward, Montgomery – Co
the fair, the museums, the library,
Swift tfc Armour’s mammoth pack
ing houses, the many handsome
church buildings, and last, but
not least, the Chicago University,
are among the great attractions
here, and are the chief elements
of the greatness of this city.
Dr. J. C. Solomon, the affable
pastor of the Woodward avenue
Baptist church, of Atlanta, Ga.,
who is author of the “Bugle Blast,”
a most excel lent and readable
book, (the bouk can be had by ad
dressing the author, at Atlanta,
<ia.), and the splendid genfcleman,
Rev. K. Van Deventer, pastor of
the Diilfie Street church, of Sa
vannah, Ga., who was for a num
ber of years an earnest worker in
the Houston association, and
Misses Pearl nnd Juinita Rogers,
of Sparks, Ga., with myself, are
stopping at the hospitable home of
Mrs. R. B. Averil, 57B0 Jackson
A word about the Rogers sisters.
Miss Pearl, who has been one of
my splendid assistants for the last
year, is taking advantage of the
great opportunities offered by the
Chicago University. She will, with
her fine natal ability, together
with the excellent training gained
here, reflect great credit upon our
.school.
M iss Juianita, who was, at the
recent commencement of the Mon
roe college, elected to the chair of
mathematics, is here, pursuing,
with real success, her chosen line
of study. We confidently predict
new lustre for dear old Monroe
with this accomplished young lady
added to the faculty.
Chicago University is the great
est school of its kind in the union.
Students are here from every sec
tion of the country, and from
across the water. Possibly no bet
ter advantages are to be had be
tween the oceans than here in this
university. The teachers are orig
inal, fresh and earnest. Though

The Parker model school, one of
the departments of the

most efficient agencies for thor
oughly equiping the teacher
I ever saw. I am simply charmed
with it. They teach many tilings,
all of which are useful and attract
ive. For instance, there is the
practical sewing school and the
clay model school. Here I saw
small boys and girls actively and
efficiently engaged in making many
articles of common utility, such
as cups and saucers, plates, bowls,
vases, etc. They learn them here.

here, and her departure causes much

FUSSELL'S
HEAD SHOTOFF
Fitzgerald, Ga., August 13.—
News reached this city this morning
that Dr. Wiley Fussell, one of the
best known men in the county, was
shot and killed by a white man named
Brantley on the public road about
8 miles east of Fitzgerald.
The murderer used a double-barrel
shotgun, at a distance of about 5
feet, the load taking effect in the
doctor’s head.
Immediately after the shooting
Brantley drove away, together with
his father, and it is presumed he is
in hiding in the swamps of the Oe
mulgee river.
Brantley bas a bad reputation, and
caught, it is said will never reach
county jail, as the friends of
are on the war path.—At
