Some fivo or six hundred shots were tired, resulting in the wounding of six whites, otic mortally, and the woud- J igof seventy-four negroes, eight of whom died before sunset, and several more since. Two wore killed on the spot. Tho stampede among the ne groes was general, and many of them were met miles off iu the country, making for home at a lively gait. It is only by such severe lessons as the above that many of the negro race will ever learn that this, is a white man’s country, a w hite man’s government, and must be controlled by white men—that the whites have Some rights that the blacks arc bound to respect.
