<Kljf /arm ani> 3lSonsel;o f b. Exhausting Land by Manure. I notice that at a recent meeting of the Farmer’s Club, it was suggested that special manures, as guano, sup erphosphate, etc., by furnishingr the soil with certain needed ingredients, enlarge the crop so much that the soil's exhausted much more rapidly Undoubtedly this is true, but this ef fect need not be limited to any kinds of manure. Even bam yard manure lias this effect. The only difference is that, in manuring with barn yard manure, a mtu-h larger quantity is ■ generally n s cd, which in part com-1 pensates for the loss to the soil by cropping. Not one farmer in a thousand applies manure enough to all his crop.!, to keep up the fertility of the soil. They may do it on one or two fields a year, hut while these are kept up other parts of the farm are overcropped in proportion to the • manure applied. It is then true that our best farm ers are more or less rapidly exhaust ing their soil? Not at all. The point that I make is that the manure applied will not itself keep the Roil rich. Market gardeners near New York, who crop their land year after year, find it necce-sary to use fifty, seventy-five, and often one hundred dollars worth of manure per acre ev ery year—an amount w hich no farm er would think of applying. They keep the soil very rich, but if they stop one year the crop is a failure. The advantage the good farmer has, is that ho can use clover, rest ing his land, onfieldm; it and making it belter fitted to absorb ammonia from the atmosphere. Tnkr> guano t.l'ftt will "exhaust” the Roil rapidly* if tho land is continuous ly < r lull'd. The first, year a Jarir crop will ho produced. Afier the second or third year, according to the condition of the land, it. loses it effect i*, and generally by the fourth year the land will ho barren. But. it is the erop and not the manure, that has exhausted the soil. Suppose that with the first erop, snv of wheat, the field had been seeded to clover. Ap ply guano the* following year, anil the grass will give a hflnvy crop, the clover rnotß will strike deep into the subsoil, and the fertility of the field will be increased largely, beyond what would be attributable to the di rect effect, of the manures. This would result whether the erop were plowed under, fed off, or mown. For in clover, tho roots form a valuable part of the erop as manure for the •oil. Guano is generally used up in the first crop after it is applied. But bone dust, however fine, is never ex hausted by the first, crop. When sown with wheat, its effects on tho succeeding clover crop, is ns remark able ns on the grain. I have seen the effect of a good application of bone dust fi>r years afterwards on subsequent crops. In this case it was probably tho heavy clover sod plow ed under, rather than the bone dust itself, which produced tho effect. But it amounts to the same thing in the end—tho heavy sod would not have been tli re if the bone dust had not been applied. I can go still fur ther and say that, if judiciously man aged, that field should be richer ten or even twenty years hence for the extra application of manure. f?o then thin groat buj'aboo about tnarmre “osha'isting” noilti, amounts to nothing. If the farmer is careful to take only two, or nt most, three crops befora reseeding with clover, amt if he feeds all his hay and oc so fodder and applies the mantire, he need never he afraid of any kind el fertilizers. By enabling him to grow larger crops ho will save more straw, more "min. more hay and more ma lt Tiro, and the fertility of his soil will be increased much faster than if he discarded s* eeSnl manures, and relied only on what the farm would pro duce. Especially is this true of gyp sum, or plaster, which is always cheap, and frequently produces the mot remarkable effects on clover.— I!’ J. F., in Fund Ifome. SconciißP Stains. —For whitening linnen it is often sufficient to wet it with soapsuds and lay it in the hot sun. Another method is, where milk is plentiful, put one pound of white soap info a gallon of milk and boil the scorched article in it. Another plan is to squeeze out the juice oft wo middle-sisc-d onions, wh'nh is boiled in half a pint of vinegar, with ore ounce of white soap and two ounces of Fuller’s earth ; the mixture is ap plied cool to the scorched par!, and when dry washed off with clean wa ter. In their treatment, a purgative, exerting a powerful influence upon these vari ous organs, is essentially necessary. 'There is no cathartic for the purpose equal to Dr.. J. Fortify the body against dis ease by purifying all its fluids with Vinegar Bitters. No epidemic can take lioid of a system thus fore-armed.
