<vpc /aim anD fiauwjjolfi Agricultural Hams. The fanner, like Uie business man, must know what he is doing; he must have some pretty decided ideas of what he is going to ftcooiti| Ji-h— --in fact, he must calculate it before hand. He must know his soil—that of each lot, not only the top, but the subsoil. He must know when is the best time to work them —whether they need summer fallowing. He mu a know the condition in which the ground must be plowed, so that, it be not too wet nor too dry. He must know that some grains require earlier sowing than others, aud what these grains are. lie must know how to put them in. He must know what it will pay to have machinery to help him as well as muscle. The Massachusetts board of Health gives an interesting paper on the lon gevity of the farmer. It says that evidence collected from country phy- sicians throughout the State for the last twenty-eight years, shows that the average length of life of a firmer in that State, is *i s j vests. Jt'lii- i - longer than that of any other class of citixt us. The c ass most nearly approaching fanners, vt*.: out door mechanic-,, live only years on an average. llow the l>oy may be saved the trouble of " going tor the cows,” is thus told by the American Stock Journal: “Every time they aredtiven up at night or in the morning, give tlieoi a good lick of weal or brim, and our worJ for it, the cows will always be on hand at the milking time.” The growth of winter wheat is greatly increasing m Kansas. The yield ol this crop per acre is heavier limn that of spring w heat, and it is Dot so susceptible to damage from unfavorable weather or by iusects. An Illinois farmer determines the age of animals over uiue years old by the following novel method: After the horse is nine years old a wrinkle comes ou the upper lip, and every year thereafter he has one well de fined wrinkle for every year after sine. If, for instance, a horse has three wrinkles, he is twelve; if he haa four, he is thirteen. Add the number of wrinkles to nine tiud you will get it. Someone who lias tried it says: “ I discovered many years ago that wood could be made to last longer than iron in the ground, but thought the process so simple and inexpensive that it wu.a not worth while making any fuss about it. 1 would as soon have poplar, basswood, or quaking ash ns any other kind ol timber for fence posts after having been set seven year,-, which wore a sound when taken oat as A lien they were first put in the ground. Time and weather hav* no effect on them. The posts can be prepared for less than two cents apiece. This is the reoipe: Take boiled linseed oil aud stii it iu pulverized charcoal to the con. sistency of paint. Put a coat of this over the timber, and there is not a man that will live to see it rot.” (WA gentleman, a long resident ot Mexico, says that a good way to aianage a horse that will not be i-hod ito take a cord the size of a com mon bedcord, put it into the mouth oi the horse like a hit, and lie h ightly on the aniio.d’s head, passing his lett ear uuriet the string, not painfully tight, hut tight enough to keep the ear do n and the cord in th> place. This done, oat the lbn -e gently on the side of the head, and comment him to follow, it subdues ~u\ horse, and he becomes as gentle aud obedient as a dog. ■ To Dt.'-Tiiuv Hum' Suns. —A cor respondent of the Country Gentleman reports that nothing will so thor ough!' destroy rose slugs as wood *slie The ashes must ho sifted on tad; io the morning while the leaves are damp, the branches being turned over carefully, so that the under aides of the leaves, to which the young slugs cling, may get their share of the siftings. If the night has beeu dewless, in order to make the work thorough, first sprinkle the bushes, and the ashes will then cliug to the slugs, to their tutor dost ruc tion. This ntay be repeated without injury to the roses, as often as the prsta mat e their appearance. Soocbs nt Lambs.*—An exchange •ay* thst for scours in young lambs, we usually give a teaspoonful of cas tor oil, anu rom three to five drops of laudanum. Magnesia or prepared chalk is good. For mild cases, in older lambs or sheep there is nothing better than ruiik porridge made with fresh milk and wheat flour. Make it a* yon would tor you; self, and g ve from half a pint to a pint each. til Sl) ..i l t t/hC: <il w ill oc I. eu ill trite It) Ol lieeusboro, N. 0., December 31, 1874, or the purpose of <.-n cling an ODD FELLOWS’ TEMPLE.,' The (-iraiid Gift is the JEJoialooiTsr Ho use, WOItTH $60,000. In their treatment, a purgative, exerting a •powerful influence upon these vari ous organs, is essentially necessary. There is no cathartic for the purpose equal to Da. J.
