Useful Information. ■
It is a very com non tiling- to hoar
♦lie expression “Farmin'*floa'f pay.*'
This h%s been the try ever store we
can rcraenfijer—how ranch longer \w
cannot say—perhaps ever Rince Ad am
was driven from the garden of Eden.■
And yet, farming has mode the world,
what it is. Tths indeed the chief cor
-ner-atone of elviliz ition.
Itis an evident foot that fiu-min;;
does not pay with a very great num
ber of persons. Jt doesjiot pay ibe,
slothful and indolent, who let thin**
•jj® loose at both end-*. Neither does
it pay thosf who have, failed in every
other undertaking and adopt farming
*th the idea that it requires no ap
plication or knowledge, to rna a farm
for pleasure or profit. It is a great
error to think that every man can
adopt farming and beootno a success
ful farmer without n-previous training
and knowledge. Observation and ex
perience teach that, in order to W
•eome a stecesstil farmer, fiiero ninst
leas ranch thought, system and ap
plication, ns is required in every other
profession. And it in only by close
application and thorough study of its
principles, that we are to expect great
success In this field of labor. The
man who expects to make farming
pay,-must make his Irasinctm -a pro
found study, and ho must avail him
self of all stfniunblo information in
neferenoe to it. Ho must pr fit by
his own experience, and the experi
ence of his brother farmers must he
subordinate to his own use, if he ex
pects to be successful. The farmer
mast love his calling, and have a ta a ie
and adaption to his business. This
is the case more particularly with the
farmer than with any other culling.
Taking this view of the subject we
are led to beliovo that farming not,
only does pay, hut in the very nature
of things must pay, for “the soil is
Ihe source from which we derive nil
that, constitutes wealth; without it,
we would have no agriculture, no
manufactures, no commerce.” And
rf these considerations are applied
with the same degree of energy that
Is bestowed upon other pursuits, the
yield of pleasure and profit will cer
tainly equal that of any other voca
tion in life.
('old Powder.
W have long been in the habit of
using what we call a cold powder,
wKkjh wabeve found of groat, value
in breaking tip colda when tnkon in
time, nnd in modifying their force
when -taken late.
The prescription is as follows:
Camphor, five parts. Dissolve in
eflicr to the consistence of cream.
Then add carbonate of ammonia, four
part#; ■opium powder, one part.
Vrsc urul keep in a tightly corked
bottle. The dose is of conrse regu
lated by the opium, and ranges be
tween three or ten or fifteen grains.
We have been accustomed to pro
scribe it for our friends by the finger
nail full, or as much as one can hold
on the finger nail.
Thia powder may be tnken in c
little water just before retiring, bv
preference, or at any hour of the day
whenever there is a suspicion of hav
ing caught cold, If need be, a mod
erate dose may be taken several days
in succession.
The advantages of this powder arc
very great:
1. The taste is aereeable, or, at
least, is not disagreeable. Even the
bitterness of the opium is mostly
neutralised by the camphor and am
monia No child objects to this
powder.
?. It is fun<rntnrl" and inexplicably
efficacious. We believe it to bp move
ifieieet. th\u t's \wwdw, nml
incomparably.-;. more agreeable. Tn
some eases it produce* * gentle per
spiration; in others, this special effect
is not observed. It is ho easy to take,
and ho harmless in small doses, that
it is well end safe to tube it whenever
we become badly chilled, —Arehinea
of Electrologil and Nr>trahria.

CAPToe Bkans.—The Garnett (Kan.)
ftsindcaler says; “Tn the ne’uihbov

that more stock has been kiiled by
ratine castor beans this fall and win

greet ignorance on this subject. The
beaus are pure death to horses and
eatt'p, hut are paid to be an excellent
article on which to fatten hog. Mr.
George Hanford, of Franklin, has dis
covered that strong coffee is an anti
dote for their poison.”

out our entire country during tho
Summer and Autumn, and remarka

heat and dryness, are invariably ac
companied by extensive derange
ments of the stomach and liver, aud
other abdominal viscera. In their
treatment, a purgative, exerting a
powerful influence upon these vari
ous organs, is essentially necessary.
There is na cathartic for the purpose
equal to 1)r. J. Wai.ker’s Vinegar
Bittkbs, as they will speedily reinciv#
the dark-colored viscid matter with which
the bowels are loaded, at the same time
■stimulating the secretions of the liver,
and generally restoring the healthy func
tions of tiie digestive organs.
Fortify the body against dis
ease by purifying all its fluids with

take hold of a system thus fore armed.
