Why .T.nfl wh-‘.i Lamps Explode.
Ail of co ii oil lamps art
caused by tit<* vaj.ot or gas that cal
ico t§ in the "pace above ibe oil.
When full of oil, of course a lamp
contains no ga*, but immediately on
lighting the lamp, consumption of oil
begins, soon (Coving a space for trna,
which oomni ones to f n ns tin
lamp warms up, tu 1 alter burning a
short time sufficient gas will accum
ulate to form an explosion. The gas
in lamp will exploJo only when ig
nited. la his respect it is like gun
powder. Cheap or inferior oil is al
-w .ys the most dangerous.
The flame is communicated to the
gas-in the following manner: The
ick tube in all lamps is made larger
iltuu the wick which passes through
ii. It would not do to have the wick
work tightly in the burner; on the
contrary, it is essential that it moves
up and down wit' perfect ease. Iu
this way it is unavoidable that space
in the lube is left alone the sides of
the wick sufficient for the flame from
the burtmr to pass down into the
lamp and explode the gas.
Many things may occur to cause
the flame to pass down the wick tube
and explode the lamp.
A lamp may be standing on a
“—mantle, and a slight puff of
win-t ir.jjTTr tire optor -n.~r •
su-ldon opening of a door, cause an
explosion.
■*. A lamp may bo token up quickly
f om a table or mantle and instantly
explode.
•1. A lamp is taken into an entry
where there isadrnft, or out of doora,
an i ait exploaion ensues.
4. A lighted lamp is taken up a
flight of stairs, or raised quickly to
plaoe it on the mantle, resulting in
an explosion. In all these ea*e the
misohifcf is done by the air movement
—either suddenly cheeking the draft
or by fore’ng air dosq the chimney
against the flume.
ft. Blowing down the ohimney to
extinguish the light is a frequent
cause of explosion.
4. Lamp explosions have also been
caused by using a chimney broken off
at the top, or one that has piece bro
ken oat, whereby the draft, is ren
dered variable and the flame unsteady.
1. (Sometimes a thoughtless per
son puts a small sized wick in a large
burner, thus loaving a considerable
spaoe in the tube along the edges of
tho wick.
8. An old burner, with its draft
dogged up, which rightfully should
be thrown away, sometimes continued
in use, and the final result is an ex
plosion.
