THE HAMILTON JOURNAL.
VOL. XV.
EDITORIAL NOTES.
The devil works every soul in his
employ to the utmost advantage for
evil, but he generally uses the clev¬
erest talent at his command in his
bar rooms.
The survey for the extension of
the Columbus & Rome railroad to
Atlanta has been discontinued. It
will be resumed before the railroad
map of the state is complete.
An effort is being made to close
the bar rooms of Washington city on
Sunday. It is discreditable that the
Sunday law has not long been en¬
forced in the capital of this Christian
nation.
The route for the Chattahoochee
valley railroad is being surveyed. An
effort will be made to have the road
located on the Alabama side of the
river, but we hope it will fail, The
route on this side may be a little
rougher, but it is shorter and through
a section more in need of railroad
facilities.
Our good biother Revill, of the
Meriwether Vindicator, this morning
announces himself a candidate for
Governor at the next election. In
endoising his candidacy, we desire
to express the hope that he may run
as if there was a funnel shaped cloud
approaching and he thought himselt
really in the cyclone belt.
The report of the bureau of sta¬
tistics, just published, estimates the
consumption of spirituous and malt
liquors in the United States for 1886
amounted to $45.90 per head of the
drinking pt pulat on, amounting in
the aggregate to the enormous sum
of $700,000,900. Of the whole
amount, the retailers received as
profits $400,000,000.
A homicide occurred in Meriweth¬
er county Tuesday night neai Brooks’
Mill. School exercises were in prog¬
ress at Union Hill, when a difficulty
arose between Warren Carter and
William Moreland, both young men,
which resulted in the death of the
former from a pistol in the hands of
the latter. The Vindicator says: An
investigation was had last Monday
and a coroner’s jury returned a ver¬
dict of murder against W. G. More
land. The principals in the affair
were both young men and the unfor¬
tunate result is deeply deplored by a
large number of friends on both sides.
It is generally agreed that had there
been no whisky present the deplor¬
able tragedy would not have occurred.
Jov. Hill of New York has vetoed
the high license bill recent’y passed
by the general assembly of that state,
fixing the retail license in cities of
400,000 and upwards at $1,000 a
year. The bill would only have ap¬
plied to the cities of New York and
Brooklyn, but in these it would have
had a salutary effect. It is to be
regretted that the low saloons with
which these cities * ’

nently spoken of as Cleveland’s suc¬
cessor, but large as the democratic
majority of Georgia is, we do not
believe her voice will ever be for ele¬
vating to the presidency of the Unit¬
ed States the avowed champion of
the worst class of rum holes known
to our civilization, nor will her neigh¬
boring commonwealths of the south
sanction such a choice.
BOOMS.
Mr. Editor: —We read much and
hear more of booms in Birmingham,
Sheffield, Anniston, Decatur and else¬
where, and many well thinking minds
conclude that the way to get rich is
to get up a boom. Webster has
rightly defined a boom to bean empty
sound out of an empty barrel. And
thus the lapid advancement in the
price of property from imaginary
causes is as empty of good results.
Will not common serfife explain that
all values are comparative and depend
on real utility for a basis. Hence
the term boom as applied in most
instances prove be “a sounding lyass
or a tinkling symbol.” The history
of booms, if it could be written, would
prove very interesting and very in¬
structive. The fearful wreck in the
world of speculation can never be
gathered. The authors of the wreck
of others flourish for a day and be
come themselves wrecks. The lesson
ought :io? to be learned iliat values can
be incresed by temporary excite
ment. To add value to a thir.g, that
thing must be improved and made
more subservient to human wants.
Fancy and puffs cannot do the work
—there must be something real about
it. A thing is worth only what you
can get out of it or the interest it
may pay. Imaginary values may dis
exist for a time reality will soon
sipate this cloud of error and may
end in darkness and despair. The
only boom of any value is the beau
tifying and improvement of home,
the establishment-of new industries,
the perfection of those already in use
and new devices to supply human
wants. Beware of the syren song of
money easily made. It does not
abide and brings with it Untold evils.
Business cyclones are often more dis¬
astrous than those from the Caribean
sea. Anti-Booms.
RESOLUTIONS OF RESPECT.
Whereas, It has pleased Almighty
God, in the dispensation of His prpv
ide to remove from us by death,
at Union Springs, Ala.,"on the 2nd,
inst., the Hon. Jno. A. Hunter, who
was formerly Mayor of the town of
Leesburg, and a charter member of
this Board;
Therefore be it resolved by the
Board of Trade of Leesburg, Florida,
That in his death our town and com¬
munity have lost a good and valuable
citizen, one who always had at heart
the best good of our community,
whose voice was ever raised in behalf
of right and morality; one wno, in the
various official relations he held m
our midst always honestly strove to
discover the right, and srs£i unflinchingly
and clean, and one who was that no

an irreparable loss, a good, faithful
and affectionate husband; his chil¬
dren a kind and indulgent father.
For consolation we can point them
only to Him who “doeth all things
for the best,” and who in his wisdom
lays a chastening hand on all in His
own good time.
That these resolutions be spread on
our minutes and a copy be furnished
to The Leesburg Commercial and to
the Union Springs Herald, of Union
Springs, Ala., for publication, and that
a copy be forwarded to the afflicted
family of the deceased.

BLUE SPRING SPRAYS.
“Blue” Spring chickens are ripening.
Mr. Fletcher Rogers and lady are
visiting Blue Spring.
We don’t know but our Ed. should
feel a little honored now that he has
a “Duke” writing for him.
Times are growing livelier— it seems
that everybody and all their kindred
are going to court (and be courted.)
We saw r two Cooks Sunday eve
said to be on their way to Hamilton.
They were both men,but maybe they
can get a situation at the hotel.
A gentleman stoppingin our village
a short time since said that both his
grandfathers and his falh-in-lnw were
blacksmiths and we were very rawch
surprised to learn that he did not
follow a like profession.
Turkeys are not as easily found as
some of our people think. We saw
a hunter to day who left his home
this morning about day break return
ing at 11 o’clock without even so
much as seeing a turkey’s track.
Don Quixote, “Robie” must not
be given away in regard to sex in the
manner you ask, hut think you were
wrongfully informed, for we nor any
of our girls (of our knowledge) have
had the pleasure of being entertained
by a Chipleyite. “Robie.”
Beware of Ointments for Ca¬
tarrh that Contain Mercury.
As mercury will surely destroy the
sense of stneli and completely derange
the whole system when entering it
through the mucus surfaces. Such
articles should never be used except
on prescriptions from reputable phy
sicians, as the damage they will do
are ten fokLtogeod you can possibly
derive from them. Haifs Catarrh
Core, manufactured by F. J. Cheney
