NEWS IN SPECIALS. The State’s Property at Chattanooga. Atlanta, September 17. —At the capitol this afternoon the question of the value of the state road, including the Tennesee property, came up in a party of representatives. Hon. R. F. Watts, of Stewart, was present, and as it was known he has been making a special study of the question, hav¬ ing visited Chattanooga and exam ined the Tennessee property, he was put on the stand and pumped. He is a gentleman of intelligence and de¬ cided convictions, and expressed the opinion with confidence that the Western and Atlantic railroad prop¬ erty is worth a clear $12,000,000. He drew an excellent map of the real estate owned by the state in Tennes see, and spoke with some enthusiasm of its present value, but pointed out certain desirable changes whicnmight be profitably made, such as extend ing some streets and laying off new ones. With these changes, and bas ing his estimate on present values, Mr. Stewart is satisfied there is a surplusage of property there owned by the state, that is to say, property which is not included in the state road lease. Secretary Lamar to Succeed Justice Woods. Washington, Sept, i 6. —New York Herald’s Washington special says: “There is apparantly no doubt that President Cleveland ho,c definitely de¬ cided to appoint Secretary Lamar to the vacancy on the Supreme Bench caused by the death of the late Jus¬ tice Woods. Several days ago the President said, in reply to a distin¬ guished southern politician who call¬ ed to urge the ciaims of one of his constituents for the place: ‘I have no doubt your friend is amply quali fied for the position, but I must say to you in all candor that I have al¬ ready decided upon the gentleman who will succeed Mr. Woods, and have no reason to believ; I shall change my mind.’ It is generally understood that Mr. Lamar was the person referred to by the President. The First Car Load of Exhibits. Atlanta, Ga., September 18.— The first car load of exhibits for the exposition, including the Schuyler company’s electric light plant, arrived Friday, together with a shipment from Birmingham. The pictures will begin to come in next week and Mr. Bradley will be here to arrange them. Mr. Collier says work at the expo sition grounds will be completed next week, and he urges home exhibitors to go to work on their structures, counters, etc., Monday morning in machinery hail and the main build ing. He says the exhibits of mining cities will be the finest feature of the fair. Dr. Fox has 7,000 beds on his list and has already engaged room for outsiders. Another Dastardly Deed. Columbus, September Other attempt was made to wreck a passenger train on the Mobile and Girard railroad, at Flournoys seven miles from this city, last night. A bar of iron was placed on the track but fortunately J the train was not de railed. The first attempt r was made on Saturday at the same place. THE CHATTANOOGA, ROME A COLUMBUS. The Matter of Terminal Facilities Being Satisfactorily Arranged. From Chattanooga Times, 14 th.] President f. D. Williamson, presi* dent of the Pome & Carrollton rail road and president of the Construc tion company of the Chattanooga, Rome & Columbus company, was in the city yesterday. President Wil¬ liamson spent a large part of the day in conference with the officials of the Cincinnati Southern railroad with ref¬ erence to terminal facilities of his road in this city. Mr. Williamson was reticent as to what was done, but stated that the conference was emi¬ nently satisfactory. It was stated by a railroad man who knows something of what is transpiring to a reporter that there was no doubt of the Chatta¬ nooga, Rome & Columbus entering the city on the Cincinnati Southern railroad tracks. President William¬ son is greatly satisfied at the progress of the work on the section of the road already under contract, and says that everything is working sat¬ isfactorily. He will return to Rome to-day,but will be here again in a few days to let the contract for building other sections of the new railroad. Within thirty days it is expected to have the entire road from this city to Rome under contract. Deafness Can’t be Cured by local app ications, as t! ey cannot reach the diseased poition of fhe ear.
