Ijc find the roads in the county erally in a better condition than he past except the road leading ■Hamilton to Blue Springs, which Jbad condition where the ditch structed by Dr. Barnes crosses road. (The commissioners of 1 district promising immediate at tion.) Also the road in Cochran’s rict south of Dr. Williams to the ;k. It not having been worked, the road from the Mulberry bridge on the state road through said district needing widening at different points and the limbs overhanging said road removed, which we respect fully call the attention of those having charge. And recommend the road leading to Smith’s store, through the mountain discontinued as public road. As a grand jury we call upon ah the officers who are charged with the duties of roads and bridges and all the good citizens of the county to unite in cariying out the laws, which are good enough in every particular, and only need to be enforced, to enable the people to have good pub¬ lic thoroughfares, and bridges through¬ out the county, which goes far to show the industry, intelligence and public spirit of any county. A FINANCE COMMITTEE APPOINTED. A committee consisting of H. W. Pitts, J. C. Hardy and T. W. Ram¬ sey was appointed to look into the finances of the county and report the same to the grand jury at the April term of Superior Court 1888, and we recommend that said committee be allowed the per diem of jurors while in the investigation of said county business. morals of the county. Upon an investigation from all por¬ tions of the county among the intelli¬ gent we are happy to congratulate the citizens of Harris county upon a steady and visable advance in the moral status of our beloved county, and we see a day not far in the future when all the temptations here¬ tofore incident to the youth as well as the old of the county will be ban¬ ished, and then what a hopeful pros¬ pect that this branch of the court of the county will only have need to transact die public interest under the law required of the grand jury. We tender to his honor Judge Jas. M. Smith our highest gratitude for his able charge given this body and his prompt dispatch of the business of the court, also to the Solicitor General, J. H. Worrill, the same for his aid and courtesy manifested to our body. We recommend that these general presentments be pub lis'ned in the Hamilton Journal. Ordered that the within general presentments of the grand jury be published as recommended. J. M. Smith, Judge. ON THE FIELD. I have been quietly devoting some time to the interest of the Journal j n my own district among my own neighbors and friends, assured that they do not appreciate my labors it would be useless to ply my journalis tic probe into other localities. Thus far, however, I am proud to state that I have met with a liberal supaort not only from subscribers who were in arrears and those whose time is about to expire, but am adding new subscribers to the already long list at this place. The idea is permeat ing in the minds of our people that the Journal deserves a rousing sup port and that every citizen iu whose veins the pride of his county is puls¬ ing who leaves no stone unturned that is an impediment to the promo¬ tion of every interest of the county, if he is not already a subscriber, is coming forward with a support that is encouraging. I casually stepped into the attractive furniture store of Mr. D. VV. Surles, who, though busi ly engaged, found ample time to un loose the eagle on the American dol dar, and finding a resting place, he folded his silvery wings in my jour nalistic purse. This only proved an incentive to action, and walking rapidly across Broad street I entered the handsome confectionery establishment of Mr. G. A. Pearce, who is headquarters for fancy groceries, confectioneries, &c., and again plied my little probe and again scored one for the Journal. Not yet satisfied and rushing on to still greater achievements I chanced to come in contact with Mr. T. T, Murrah, of the firm of Murrah Bros. Theophilus is a young man of fine business qualities, enjoys together with his brother, Mr. G. N. Murrah, a splendid trade and alive to eveiy interest of the county, scoring anoth¬ er. I departed for new conquests. Meeting with the genial proprietor of the Chipley House, Mr. H. C. Me* Kigney, he didn't hesitate to loosen the bands of the caged eagle and un¬ folding his wings like you would un¬ fold the twelve pages of the best pa¬ per in Harris vcounty, he found a lodgement in the pocket-book of your correspondent. It affords your representative un¬ alloyed pleasure when such progress¬ ive citizens as Capt. L. L. Hardy, Col. R. B. Traylor, Messrs S. C. Good¬ man, J. D. McGee, W. E. Goodman and E. F. Sturdivant, of Chipley, and Tommie Hogan and W. N. Maddox of Whitesville, subscribe, and othcr wise by their patronage thus help to build up their county paper in that is creditable and highly commendable, Besides those enumerated I have added the names of Heywood Smith, W. H. Teel, J. D. McKisic and Jno Chambers. The last tv are colored men of some aspiratioi My object is simply to give t friends of the Journal a bird’s e vicw of what i am doing as I purpo to carry on this work with great vig to Christmas. I expect to make i ports of my work, therefore, I ho die next report will be longer. VV 1 will be the nex man ? Who will be the first to give me more job wot I send you down some this wee more promised. As our local failed to send a notes last week with your permiisi I will notice an event which culn nated in the happy union of Mr. \ E.
