The Gift of Healing.

lasted, as we know, to tlie age of
Anne, and the service used on the
occasion can be read in the Common
^ayer Book printed in her reign. That
very sacred king, Charles II—if we may
believe an eye witness, one of his own
surgeons—performed many hundreds of
cures, and is said to have touched in
ifventy-one years upward of 92,000 suf¬
ferers. “God give you better health and
more sense,” was the benediction of Will¬
iam III over the only person he could be
persuaded to touch. The writer observes
feat though the belief iu the virtue of the
royal touch was a si'ly superstition, it
was not, as Macaulay terms it, an im¬
posture, since patients were often cured
by the impression produced on the nervous
Astern, the excitement caused by the
toyal touch in cases of scrofula causing a
freer flow of blood to the part affected.
The remedies given by a physician in
former days appeared to be often founded
■P" than conjecture, and were sometimes worse
the disease. Cardan, a man of great
genius, and as much renowned for mathe¬
matics as for medical skill, wrote a pre¬
ttie scription composed of pearls, gems and
bone of a unicorn, and when troubled
with sleeplessness he relates that he ap¬
plied bear’s grease to seventeen places on
> the body. Cardan, who, by the way, was
summoned in the last illness of Edward

executed for poisoning his wife, and
| the father, in a dream, heard a voice tell
him to put into his mouth the emerald
wore round his neck, and that would
able him to forget his son. He did so,
he says, with such good results that he
ivas always oppressed when he could not
pave the stone between bis lips.—The

What is this Disease that is Coming
Upon Us ?
Like a thief at night it steals
in upon us unawares. Hie pa¬

in the back. They feel dull
and sleepy; the mouth has a
had taste, especially in the
morning. A sort of sticky slime
collects about the teeth. The
appetite is poor. There is a
feeling like a heavy load on the
tomach; sometimes a faint, all
gone sensation at the pit of the
stomach which food does not
satisfy. The eyes are sunken,
the hands and feet become cold
and clammy. After a while a
cough sets in, at first dry, but
