NAMES.
Shakcspeare says a rose by any
oiher name would smell as sweet, but
it would not sound right to call a
rose by the name of thorn. There
is something in a name and a thous¬
and tender memories cling about a
name. It is beautiful or otherwise
as the scenes and circumstances they
represent. Who could forget the
tender care of that maiden aunt,
M—, who watched with almost a
mother’s love the helpless hours of
infancy. The names suggest and
bring up from the store-house of
memory events and incidents which
seem a part of us, excite the tender¬
er t emotions and we live them over
again. I t
If it were not for the bright link
Within affection’s chain,
1 would be a child
And roam those hills again.
There often seems t) be a fitness
in a name, Adam had this idea
when he named the arimals in cre¬
ation’s early morn. It would not be
proper to call a fine hors: a mule.
There i« much in a name and it is
eminently proper to call things by
1 heir right names. Some people
wickedly nick name both persons
and places and such a habit ought to
be avoided by sensible people. The
old adage says that ‘7011 had as well
kill a dog as to give him a bad name”
and seme people think that you had
best kill the dog any way for fear
that he may get a bad name. Now
it ought to be unlawful to have such
a name as Dittenkooferkimer, but
change the name and make a better
person of him or her. It is some¬
times suspicious for one to change a
name but if Mary Sikes changes to
Mary Dikes and prefixes Mrs to it
then it is all right. So do if it seem
elh good to thee.
ith some people it is difficult to
remember names, and at times it is
very embarrassing not to be able to
call the name on meeting a friend.
To most persons it is puzzling to
account for the fact that names are
1 not readily remembered. Some j eo
pie with good memories as to other
things fail to recall names only with
difficulty. Nearly all of our memory
of persons and places comes from as
! sociation of ideas. For instance,
we
I visit the home of childhood; the ob¬
jects before us suggest a thousand
things long forgotten—one thing sug
gests another until the mind is far away
from the starting point. In a name
there is no association of ideas. The
name stands alone like the single fig
ure an d must be remembered by ii
self and for itself. vVe remember
names as we remember the multipli
cation table, purely as an act of mem¬
ory. Names have no peculiar accent
an( j cannot be recalled by mere
sound. Memory of names is often
aided by remembering the first letter
in spelling the name. It is related of
Emerson* that on returning from
the burial of his life-long friend,Long¬
fellow, he could not remember his
name. The remembrance of names
like all the other faculties of the mind
can be much improved by continuous
effort. Observer.

Mr. Editor :—There seems to be
an earnest effort on the part of farm¬
ers to better their condition. This
is most commendable and ought to
be encouraged. Hence the origin of
the farmers’ alliance as an out-sider
cnnnrKfa; supposes and ana their tneir spread enroll is is a 1 marked marked
feature of the day. Report says that

non-sectarian and non-political. If

best objects are defeated. Shipwreck
will surely follow on the dangerous
rocks of political strife. There is
another important lesson to be learn-
ej and that is not lo expect too
much at first. The giant was once
an infant. All great enterprises re
quire time for development and to
meet the full end of its purposes.
New York was not built in a day and
the objects of the farmers’ al iance

despair if disappointment meets you.
Full manhood and full fruition must
be the result of lime and long-cootin
ued effort. Well-wisher.
