The grand jury has returned 19
true biMs and special presentments
and two no bills.
Uncle Dennis Miller was chosen
bailiff to the grand jury in the stead
of Uncle John Turner, deceased. He
makes an efficient officer.

this afternoon until Monday morning,

W. Poer, has been doing the county
good service, It is a body far above
the average and its members have
been active in the discharge of their
duties.
Hon. Henry Persons and Col. S.

Court has been engaged today m
the trial of the case of the State vs
Henry Butts, who is charged with
burning the burn of Mr. W. W. Jen
kins last Novembei. The evidence
was in this morning and is circumstan
tiai. Mr. Cameron made the open
ing speech for the defense and was
followed by Messrs Worrill and Stan
ford tor the State. The closing speech
is now oeing made by Col. Thornton
as we go to press.

cannot be devised for disposing of
misdemeanors, petty larcenies, and
similar offenses, 'l ime on the farms
now is valuable, yet scores of wit
nesses have been forced to quit their
work and attend upon court for sev
eral days, in cases where the majesty
of the law has been amply maintain
ed by a fine of five, ten or twenty
dollars. Petty crimes should not go
unpunished, if greater crimes are to
be avoided, but a less costly method
of meeting the ends of justice might
be devised.
Belated Localt.
The weather this morning was crisp.

Waverly Hall has a good delega¬
tion in town to-day.
Tuesday evening the clouds looked
dark and they came up in a sudden
sort of way that suggestec to the vis

nooga, Rome & Columbus railroad
w ill run from Carrollton to Newnan
and thence to Greenville. This is
the natural direction for the road to
