HAMILTON. GEORGIA,
Al’Kll. 20. 1888
GRAND JURY PRESENTMEN f S.
We, the Grand Jurors, drawn and
empanelled to serve at the April term
of the Superior Court of Harriscoun
ty. beg to make the following pre
sentments:
We find the public roads in good
condition except the roads in David
son s district, No. 787, which are in
a very bad condition, also in Waverly
Hall district, No. 954, the roads have
been poorly worked, the hands only
working about one day in each year. |
Also a portion of the Valley Plains j
road inside the corporate limits of
ihe town of Hamilton is in a danger
ous condition and we recommend 1
ihat.it be put in good order at once.
We find the bridge at Johnson’s mill, j
on Flat Shoal creek in an unsate con
dition. The Mitchell bridge and the
Walker bridge over the Mulberry
creek . are also the. budge j ov i
gone;
the Ossahatchie creek on the Colum
bus and Hamilton road.is gone. We :
recommend that the commissioneis :
ol roads and revenues take into con- \
sideration the piopriety t>f building
iron or lattice wooden bridges actoss
the most important stieams in the
county. ,
We find the court house in need
.
of slight repairs which we recommend I
that the commissioners have attsnd
ed to at once. The jail is in a very
dilapidated condition. The body of
thc building is so rotten that the
prisoners cannot be confined* in it
except in an iron box on the second !
floor, which ir only about 10x14 feet,
without sufficient venti’ation for one f
man. It now contains eight prison
ers. most of whom have been confined
there for the past three months, and
the stench is intolerable. This small
box or cage is the only available spot
in the whole budding which can be
used lot ihe safe keeping of the pris
oners, and all colors and sexes must j
1 e kept in this small space. While j
wc are aware of the fact that the
count) will have to expend a large
amount of money in repairing the
bridges washed awav by the recent
freshet wc most earnestly recommend
^at comm ^ ss ^ onf * rs roa ^ s an ^
j revenues levy a special tax for the
specific purpose of building a new
I and substantial jail.
We find the books of the Ordinary '
j Sheriff and Clerk of the
: court neatly and correctly kept, and
the proper entries made; also
: books of the Tax Receiver,
'
; sioners Roads and Revenues, Treas¬
urer, County School Commissioner,
anc j t j ie p^ks G f Notaries Public and
Justices kept as the law directs. The
books of the Tax Collector in the
main, correctly kept. Amount now
due the county as shown by the tax
digest by the collector is one thous
and twenty three and 65 100 dollars,
We find outstanding unpaid issues to
the amount of one thousand, two
hundred and eighty three 50-100 dol
lars.
We recommend that (Leo. W.Poer
be appointed Notary Public for Whit
aker’s district, 679, G. M. Also that
B. R. Harris be appointed Notary
Public for Milner’s district, 782, G.
M.
We elected Jno. F. Jenkins, Thos.
H. Kimbrough and M. B. Roberts to
fill the vacancies on the Board of
Education.
w recommend the commissioners
G jf roa d s and revenues take into
consideration thc propriety of build
ing a bridge at Stanford > s mill , We
a i so reC0 mmend that the commission
crs ] eV y f or COU nty purposes 150 per
cent on s tate tax. We also rec
0 mmend that our deceased bailiff
j G j in q Turner’s family be paid the
per diem for this term of the court.
We find the property unequally re¬
f turned in regard to value.
We most respectfully return thanks
to the Hon. Court, and to the Solici¬
tor Gen’l J. H. WorriU.
Wr recommend that these pre
sentments be published in the Ham.

the fact that of the original board
trustees, but five remain citizens

occurred the present year and seven
have occurred since the board was
