It'-JE Cotton Sale.
Mr. James Bentley, representing
Mr. J. B. Holst, of Columbus, was in
the city Iasi week and purchased
about 240 bales of cotton. The pur¬
chase cleaned up the crop of 1887-8,
in the warehouses here, except 4
bales. The larger part of that sold
was of the crop of Hon. B. H. Wil
liatns. The sales brought about
$io,ooo—iin amount that if generally
( lislributeil would make things easy
here for a while in a financial way.
r Smile* Oi» It.
l)r. Franklin Barnes is an enthusi¬
astic allianceman as well as a very
successful farmer. He is president
of the Hamilton sub-alliance and
says that he notes with pleasure the
fact that providence is smiling upon
the order here. Two weeks ago last
Saturday, when the ground was parch¬
ed and plows all stopped for want of
moisture in the earth, while the alli¬
ance was in session a shower fell that
proved to be the harbinger of a good
season. Last Saturday the order met
again and again providence smiled in
a gracious shower, followed up close
ly by rains that have gladden
ed crops all over the land. The or
der is founded upon correct
principles, and is designed to benefit
primarily the man who of all others
“looks throng!) nature up to nature’s
God,” and in benefitting him to ben
efit through him all mankind, and
l)r. Barnes is not alone in thinking
God is blessing and will continue to
bless it in a signal way.

Col W. L. Latham, of the Valley
Plains district, was in town last week
and in taking with nim we learned
that a ve.y interesting law point has
been sprung in h’s neighborhood
touching the stock law question and
the homestead The point was run
upon unexpectedly and it may be
brought before the Supreme court.
It seems that some cattle got out and
were taken up and advertised to be
sold to pay the damages they had
done to crops they had trespassed
upon. The owner filed a plea that
they were covered by a homestead
and that they could not be sold ex¬
cept for the five things laid down in
the code and by the Supreme court,
and that this was not one of the five
excepted. He argued that the dam¬
age they have done was something
he was liable for and that they are
no longer subject for his debts. Upon
the other hand it was claimed that
the stock were liable for the
damage they had done, for to
hold other»vise would be to do away,
in effect, with the entire stock law, as
all homesteaded stock, nobody being
responsible for them, might run at
large with impunity. This being the
case, it would be necessary to fence
against them and in fencing against
them it would be no more trouble to
fence against all stock. The justice
decided in accordance with this last
position and an appeal will probably
be taken, We will watch the case
in its progress with much interest.

The Columbus Enquirer of last
Sunday alluded to Captain G. £
Thomas, the clothier, in a very com
plimentary way. He is always to p e
countcd on? in public or private, to
do ddn g S ke undertakes in a manner
t hat is creditable. He sells ready
made clothes and sells only the best,
and these proclaim the man wherever
they m known . They fit jam up,
they wear well and they cost blit
little. These are cardinal points with
Thomas, known to every reader
this journal who has followed Us ad
vice and bought goods of him. the
' There is no use attempting topaint
lily, adorn the rose, or to say too
much of G. E.Thomas and the ready
made clothes he sells.
