TRUTH ABOUT TEXAS.
Editor Journal : If you remem¬
ber I promised to write to you last
January, but have delayed up to this
time. Having seen the letter clip¬
ped from the Enquirer Sun and pub¬
lished in the Jou.'VAL of May the
18th, and as I see the light it requires
a reply. I have waited for a more
able pen to do so, but as no one has.
I will let you know how it is here in
God’s country—in Cass county, Tex¬
as—from one who was reared in old
Harris county, Georgia.
T have seen nineteen crops grow
here and I know whereof I speak
when I te n you that the virgin soil
here will produce as much corn or
cotton per acre as the land in Harris
will with five dollars worth of guano
to the acre evei * yea’*. You at once
see the advantage. Her; one can
buy the land ’n.proved and get a
wa rantee deed to it for what it costs
to fertilize one year there. Mr. Ger¬
many says it costs from four to seven
dollars per acre to rent land in Texas.
It may, where he is, but that was his
mistake, as is the case with hundreds
who go through the best part of Tex¬
as to the rich black lands, expecting
to find all the coons up one tree out
there, but behold, the tree is not.
Germany gives advice to all who
have homes »n Georgia and Alabama
t ) consider well before they make a
leap in the dark. There is no need
of any one’s leaping in the dark.
There aic cheap rates to Texas fiom
all over the Unitecl Stales lor those
who w‘ e h to come and see the state ;
and if after seeing what Texas is they
do not wish to invest their money in
her lands or enterpikes of any kind,
there no law to compel them to do
so.
Germany is nearly as far from
here as it is from here to where you
are, and he knows about as little
about Texas as a man who was never
here, except that per.ion where he
fives, and that in the d / belt. But
you notice lie doesn't want to go
back to his old p’ace to live, and the
truth is he knows he can do better
here, even if he is in a dry county.
He speaks of the Avery plow that
sells in Columbuk for five dollars,
sells where he is for eight. You can
buy them at Jefferson at $4, each.
Wagons are as cheap here as they are
Jn Columbus; dry goods are a little
Ivgher.
Lands he says are worth from $8
to $22 per acre, where he lives.
Lands here are worth from $1 to $10
according to location, and if a man
has not got all the cash he can get
all the time he wants to make the
mone) out of the place. So there
is no use of any one renting land if
he prefers to work his own place, in
Texas.
He complains of paying from 65c
to 70c per bushel for corn, after a
three years’ drouth. In January,
last, I was at West Point, Ga., and I
saw men glad to pay 80c per bushel
for corn, after only a very short
drouth, and then hauling it as far as
our Texas people had to carry theirs.
He says there are more dissatisfied
people in Texas than he ever saw
anywhere. That may be, as a great
many come here and expect to get
rich Without work. Texas is not re¬
sponsible for that, and here let me
say to all who want to come to Tex¬
as, stop in Ihe timber belt and till
the soil well and there is not a place
on God’s green earth that will pay a
better reward for web directed labor,
than eastern Texas, Cass county.
I speak from a.r experience of 19
years here.
He speaks of hundreds of people
leaving Texas; yes, and you vs ill find
thousands leaving every one of the
other states hunting the old goose
that lays the golaen egg, that they may
kill her, and thus it will be to the end
of time. A man must not expect to
find a place where there is no dissat¬
isfaction among the people; he will
never find it in this life. Those he
speaks of as wanting to go back to
their old homes would be of no ben¬
efit if they could get back. They
are chronic grumblers wherever they
may be placed.
Now, Mr. Dennis, if you will pub¬
lish this random letter, the first- one
I ever wrote for print, you will let my
kin in Harris know there is quite a
difference in the opinion of Mr. Ger¬
many and myself as regards Texas,
her people and the great future map¬
ped out for her by the great Archi¬
tect of the universe. She will in a
very short time be the banner state
in the union. So mote it be.
Your friend and well wisher,
J. J. Evans.

the county should bring up a good
list. The enterprise is a noble one
and ought to command public aid
and encouragement. Harris county
can and ought to make a highly cred¬
itable exhibit at the Chattahoochee
Valley Exposition at Columbus next
October. It only needs the effort to
secure success. Troup, Talbot and
other connties will make county ex¬
hibits and Harris must not be left in
back-ground. Rally to the rescue
and success is attained. It needs to
argument to show the immense ben
efits of this enterprise to the county
and to individuals. Let us show to
the world that Harris county is not be¬
hind in public spirit, liberality and
enterprize and that it is rich in agri¬
cultural products, modern improve¬
ments, inventions and art handiwork.

Look at my face and hands—not a
pimple,
Such as you saw there some time
ago.
See my fresh cheeks, and I’m getting
a dimple,
I don’t look at all like I used to, I
know.
My face was all blothes—complexion

No wonder they thought me and
called me a fright;
No one need have pimples and skin
