HARDW ARE, Columbus, Ga.
THE COLUMBUS EXPOSITION.
The SuccfiMH of the Great. Show Mow Ah
Mured. The Attraction**.
The preparations for the Chatta
hoochee Valley Exposition, which will
open in Columbus Octobea 4th, have
so far progressed as to assure a bril
liant success. Most elaborate and ex
tensive arrangements for the great
show have been made. All neces
sary buildings have been erected at
the city’s cost, and very liberal sub.
script ions from the citizens have en
able.1 the management to spare no ex
ptuise in arranging the grounds. I
exhibits will be fine and numerous,
and the success of the special features
of the Expositor is already assured.
There will be a military prize drill
on the opening and second days, and
no less than ten of the leading com¬
panies of the South have already en¬
tered. There will be a great re-un¬
ion of Confederate vetrans; a tourn¬
ament; manufacturers’ day; pyrotech¬
nic displays, to be furnished under
contract with one of the most cele¬
brated fire-works firms in the United
States; a genuine old-fashioned South¬
ern fox chase, and similar entertain
incuts. The racing will be unusually
line, as no expense has been spared
in tin* preparation oi the race course.
The track is simply perfect, 1 and was
, built ... . eliptical form and , after ... the .1
m
most approved models. The Kxposi
lion is interstate in its scope. The
prosperous city of Columbus is the me¬
tropolis of the Chattahoochee Valley J
and here the three great States of
Georgia, Alabama and Florida will
unite in friendly competition. These,
with their sister States, will co-operate
in making a grand display. Exhibi¬
tors have rarely had offered them
such inducements as this Exposition
will afford. Premiums are liberal,
the purses are generous, and the at¬
tendance will he phenominally large.
The many novel and distinctive fea¬
tures and attractions, and the very
exhaustive display fiom all quarters,
will render the occasion one of profit
to exhibitors, of pleasure to visitors,
and of great instruction to all who at¬
tend.
The railroads, with their usual lib¬
er Jity toward such enterprises have
fi .v t the rate of one cent a mile for
p issi ngers, of one rate for individual
exhibits, and no < bilge either way
for county exhibits. This will insure
a great attendance. Columbus is a
live city, and nothing will tend more
to bring her into notice and add to
her prosperity than this Exposition.

Since the Chattanooga, Rome &
Columbus railroad goes to Atlanta
our hopes are crushed. The William¬

forsaken us.
If the rain doesn’t break off, if is
general, “bagging trusts” nor cotton
will not agitate the minds of the peo¬
ple. It is rotting very fast, Oh,
for a little sunshine.

Cap Bray, colored, while coming
hurriedly for a physician on Saturday
night last ran into a barbed wire
fence near Capt. L. L. Hardy’s and
was badly wounded. His mule too
was seriously wounded. It is a fact
that mules and horses cannot see this
wire and that it is becoming very de¬
structive to them. A remedy is to
nail a strip of plank at the top which
proves to be a safeguard against
horses running into it.
The prosperity of the Farmers
Alliance is noted with pleasure and
astonishment. One day last w r eek
Secretary 11. L. Burkes sent by ex¬
press one hundred and forty charters
and on Wednesday lie sent 68 more.
The demand ds daily increasing and
means business. Secretary B. and
his assistant have daily heavy work
to do. This wonderful organization
now extends entirely across the belt
cotton growing states, and will
become a very strong power in pol¬
itics.
