THE HARRIS COUNTY FAIR.
It is not to be expected llmt
ris county will make as good an
ibit as she could and will a
hence. In this as in other things
people need education, thought
interest.* It is to be feared that
will not do as well as they could.
Don’t say this, but send tHe
you have and let others judge
matter of quality and fitness. There
will doubtless be many at the fair
who will say that “1 have at home
better article than the one on
tion,” and this will be true. Then
you will be ashamed that you had
little public Spirit and 'enterpiise
not to send foiward your article
contribution. Let every one
ute something and as many
as they Can and do not leave to
ers what you yourself ought to do.
From present indications
will be a large attendance at the
and the occasion will be of special
terest. Come’onc, come all, and
make it so. Harris county must wear
the blue ribbon and she will if
sons and daughters are true to her.

“WOODEN-HEADED.”
YY’hcn a wooden pavemant was de¬
sired outside St. Paul’s cathedral,

wnl simply ‘put their heads together,’
the thing is done”! They were not
half so wooden-headed, however to
deny the meiit of Dr. R. V. Peirce’s

DIRECT FROM THE FRONT.
Knoxville, Term., July 2, iSSS
The swisls Specific Co., Atlanta,
Ga.—Gentlemen: I can cheerfully
and truthfully say’that S. S S. is the
greatest blood purifier on earth. In
18S4 I contracted blood poison.
Physicians treated me with no good
results. I took a half dozen different
kinds of blood medicin, but without
receiving any permanet relief! I
was induced to try S. S. S. I began
the first bottle with the gravest doubts
of success. I had been so often de¬
ceived. But improvement came,
and I continued its use until perfect
ly we ll. I have since married and
have a healthy family No trace of
the disease is seen. Swift’s Specific
done all this for me, and I am grate
ful. Yours truly,
J. S. Strader,

THREE CHEERS FOR THE HAR
RiS COUNTY FAIR.
Mr. Editor: As at present in¬
formed there will he a large crowd in
Hamilton on the 27 and 28—next
Thursday and Friday—at the County
Fair.
It is earnestly to be hoped that no
one will he disappointed, but that
“great expectations” will be realized.
In order that this may be so, let ev
ly one contribute something and in¬
duce everybody to come. It is safe
to say that you will not regret it and
that you will see many things to in¬
terest and instruct you.
People are more educated by what
they see than by what they hear.
Come and see what the world is doing
and keep abreast with the progress of
the age. Especially make yourself
acquainted with the products of your
own county, its capabilities, fine stock,
line cotton, corn, sugar cane, sorghum,
wheat, rye, oats, barley, &c., &c. Its
inventive genius. Do you want the
best ploughs, scrapes, harrows, culti¬
vators and planters made in Harris
county? Come and see and get them.
Talk up the fair and do some good
for your race and day.
Farmer.

THERE IS NO REAL SUCCESS IN
LIFE WITHOUT INTEGRITY.
The erring may flourish for a time
like the green bay tree, but sooner or
later retribution comes. Talent is a
wonderful gift, but without honesty is
the sharp-edged tool in the hands
of a child and may destroy its posses¬
sor. In the galaxy of talent in the
days of Tom Cobb, Henry Hull, Gar
lington, Felton, Ben Hill, Dendy and
others in Franklin College, none
shone more brilliantly than John Hen
ry , of the nice little city of
Greensboro. He was brilliant beyond
his peers, talented quick and always
ready, a good scholar, but a bad boy,
destitute of honesty and integrity.
Several little tilings shown only by
circumstances, confirmed the suspicion
of his honesty, and his reputation was
mine. He was wild, always in some
mischief, but so adroit as generally
to escape detection, He stood at the
head of his class and deserved the
Erst honor, but for want of moral
character got only the fourth.
On one occasion that grand old
man. Dr. Hull, was appointed to lec
uire him. The Dr. was kind hearted
but a good talker. John said that
the Dr.’s talk was very brilliant
fatherly and seemed to feel
for the young man. At the conclu¬
sion of the lecture, John said:
“Doctor, will you allow me to say
a word?”
“Certainly,” replied the Doctor.
“Well,” says John, “I think the
next time the faculty appoints you to
lecture me that you had better write
it.”
The Dr. was very much surprised
and made 110 reply. The next morn¬
ing, meeting John at the college door,
the Dr. said:
“You thought yesterday that I
better write my lecture—that would
he casting pearls before swine.”
J ohn quickly replied :
“Why, Doctor, has it taken you
this time to think of that ? ”
The Dr. passed on utterly
ed.
This brilliant young man met a
sad fate—died by the hand of
lence on the Pacific slope and left
nothing worthy to be remembered.
If history he philosophy teaching by
example bis case furnishes fearful
warning. Imogen.
