------
a sketch of the Executive Farm and
Its Tall tows.
On the train the other evening we
rode down from Macon with Gov.
Gordon. His wife and (laughter
were with him. Mrs. Gordon is a
fine-looking woman indeed, and his
daughter, Miss Fannie Gordon,
would catch the eye of the unobserv
i ; ng. as she evidently inherits these
characteristics from her mother. We
had quite a long talk with Gov. Gor
don regarding the new administration.
Mr. Riley likes to assure the people
that Gen. Harrison’s will give tlfe
country the ^ best administration it
ever had. Gov. Gordon said that
he woulc i.ot interfere with Gen.
Harrison’s adminstration. J think I
can say, without violating any con
fidence, that Gov. Gordon will rot
interrupt the new administration,
provided it is satisfactory.
I believe that in the South there
was never a more general to do as
she has been in the habit of doing
than today. Eveywhere wh see man
ifested an earnest spirit, a tireless en
ergy directed towards the best inter
ests of those who manifest it regard
less of party. A conciliatory policy
in the South would never have a
wiuer field to work in than it would
today. Industries here are looking
for a fostering hand.^ a fostering
hand couid get steady work here all
the fall. New enterprises, need 1
nothing but capital and industry to
make them self supporting, could be
started up all over the South. With
a fine climate, good air, warm ?un,
wet rains and a bright red soil, the
South is on the eve of an era of pros
perity which bids fair to dawn at any
moment. I do not know exactly
what I have said, but I will not take
it back now.
Gov. Gordon told us about his
ranee. He is an enthuastic farmer
and asked us to visit his farm, but
we cannot drop our lecturing, to go
gadding about with every govenor him we
*rpn across. So we told that
with us life was real, life was earnest,
and we coaid not drop our work to
visit the executive farm of Tom
Dick and Harry.
ENJOYING THE MORNIOG REPAST.
Gov. Gordon is maintaining a
large herd of cows by pasturing them
on the rich, succulent foliage of the
fish-pole. The skittish reader may
change me with lying in order to as
tonish him, but such is not the case.
The ordinary cane pole, which is
so largely used for fishing purposes
by the plain two for aquarter sports
man, who generally gets all the fish,
here grows ir. wild, barbaric splendor
and profusion without replanting.
Gov. Gordon has a fish pole orchard
covering a large are«, ovea which he
pastures his cattle. These canes
grow to a great height, unless fed
down, anct/it is no uncommon sight
to see an'ecru cow going about with
a Step ladder and a pair of long
handled pruning shears gathering "dew. her
breakfast stili wet with
The fishing P pole ^ grows n to a hight 0

of 20 to 30 feet, and the leaves are
very nutritious to a tall cow. Gov.
Gordon says that lie is going to graft
the click reel on his fish poles next
and thus nndu«tr V T
fully grafted up mi this pole, it is on!v
a question of lime, 1 am sure, when
the new bass reel can be introduced
and attain its fall size. Gov. Gor
c ] on is said to be a verv successful
farmer, and his salary as
governor enables him to make his
f irm self-supporting. He enjoys
meeting the yeomen cf Georgia and
telling them about his hopes and
aspirations In this way he maks
many friends among the voting
classes
PEFECTLY SAFE. '
