Mrs. Harrison likes the brother in
black at a respectable distance, and
has turned off all the colored domes
ties at the W hite House. Her liege
lord is not more favorably inclined
to receive him into places of trust. In
the di stribution of offices it is his poli
cy to ignore the negro, and put in re
publicans and protection democrats,
This is a severe blow to the colored
race who built high hopes of advance¬
ment under the republican adminis¬
tration. They will learn in time not
to put their “trust in princes,' but
endeavor to attain the hightest
good by industry and perse
verance.

to be a bale ofnothernor western hay

proper attention was paid to forage
crops. Sorghum is a valuable crop
both for syrup and as stock feed, es
pecially the latter. All stock is fond
of it, and it is so easily made. It is
an excellent tonic and has good fat

Rats are a great pest. Most barns
are infested with them. An easy way
to destroy rats fill is to put a wash-pot in
your barn, about two thirds with
water, spread cotton seed lightly over
the water, and throw on top a few
ground peas, place aboard h<> the
rats can get to the top of the wash-pot;
the rats will go in and be drowned,
