illustrates the idea.
Elder persons well remember the
Harrison freshet of 1840, the most
destructive flood O* this centnry in
Georgia. Branches became creeks,
creeks rivers, and rivers inland seas.
The destruction of life and property
was mourned for years after. On the
east bank of the Oconee river near
Athens, just above the upper bridge,
one Gunther,-unmindful of public
sentiment, good morals, or P u ? >Ii c ;
welfare,-had erected what he called J |
a saloon, but better known as a grog-

out side of the corporate limits of

an, 1 they could not reach him. But
there was a power that could reach
him and did.
The rain descended and the floods
came, and the Oconee was higher
than was ever before known and still
rising. The lower bridge had been
swept away and the factory was in
imminent danger. Crowds of people,
old and young, ihronged the river
bank watching the increasing flood,
Trees, fences and part of housssrush

scene was f iscinating a d the crowd
lingered until a late hour at night.
The factory watchmen kept their vig
il all night, and early next morning
reported the river still rising. At an
early hour the crowd began to assem
hie, and soon a vast multitude lined
the margin of the water running hith
er and thither to watch the moving I
flood. Report came that Guntner's
grog-shop was afloat and had lodged
against the upper bridge. As the
crowd started up, the bridge and
Gunther’s house cam .■ floating down,
a i K t when it came to the rock dam of
the factory, over it went and broke
into a thousand pieces. Out came
barrells, chairs, billiard table, Ac. &c.
Where is Gunther? the crowd ex
claimed. It was soon ascertained
that Gunther on awakening about sun
rise found bis house afloat and escap¬
ed by swimming leaving behind all
his earthly posessions and his ill-got¬
ten gain.s He had but one suit of

did much damage it removed one
of the direst evils that ever afflicted
