A bill to amend the duelling laws
of the state, was introduced in the

above , quotation. , . He „ had l j graduated , ,
at the-Umversity wit i first honors
came home “the admired of all ad
mirer. He was genial, witty, and
pleasant wilh every one, and there¬
fore a great favorite. He was wealthy,
owning a large plantation and many
slaves. Some evil disposed persons
surmised . , ihat , this big inherited fort
une would soon disappear, but this
prophecy proved utterly false. He
took charge of his place and managed
it with signal ability, and well illus¬
trated the fact that it required the
best qualities of a general to make a
successful farmer. He made money
rapidly, and made friends c f all his
neighbors.. He acted wisely and
married the girl of his early love,
though she was poor in this world’s
goods, and too happier people could
not be found. Five happy years had
passed, then the sun-shine of that h ip¬
py home wbs darkened by Reginald’s
becoming a dispeptic, Remedies
failed and it soon appeared
that he was an obstinate
hypochrondriac, his mind filled
with all sorts of fanciful imaginings,
that he had every disease to which
flesh is heir.” He took all sorts of
medicines and found no relief. Fi¬
nally he decided to take no medicine
at all. Then he imagined that he
would freeze to death unless he kept
his room at a certaiu temperature.
Tais idea became so strong that he
abandoned all business, confined him¬
self strictly to his room day and night.
No expostulation of friends could
move him. b . . »e fc,
came a mere skeleton. Alter a time
he refused all visitors and was verily
a hermit. The public began to for
get that such a man lived- Mrs.
Groves was au accomplished Christian
woman. In T the ,, early , winter . she , was
absent, sitting up with a sick neighbor.
The palatial residence was discovered
to be on fire. Wheu Reginald awoke
the roof was falling in and he barely
escaped with his two children. The
neighbors were soon present but noth
ing was saved,
Reginald and family found a tem¬
porary home with a neighbor and
weut at once with great energy to
rebuild, forget the danger of ’’freez¬
ing to death” and became his self
again. He lived to be an old man
and was never so affected again.
