EDITORIAL NOTES.
Harris Superior court will convene
here the second Monday in October.
Eight prisoners languish in jail await¬
ing trial during the fall session.
Messrs. Huffand Patterson have
become rational once more and have
quietly returned to their repeetive
places in the house.
Cotton is coming in rapidly and
is bringing a goad price. The re¬
ceipts up to date are nearly double
what they were at a corresponding
date last year. The market price to

Equinoctial storms have been rag¬
ing over the conntry this week, but
the weather is warmer after such a
visitation than was reasonably expect¬
ed. Frost has been predicted for the
first days of October.
Jacksonville Florida was complete¬
ly submerged by a cloud-burst Mon¬
day, and much property was destroy¬
ed. These mysterious forces of na¬
ture are often as destructive as the
much dreaded cyclone.
The Georgia State Fair will open
at Macon, on Wednesday, October
23rd. Liberal premiums have been
offered for county and other exhibits,
and all the varied products of the
greatest state in the Uniox will be on
exhibition. The railroads will give
reduced rates, and a very large crowd
will doubtless attend.
The Columbus Enquirer- Sun, has
passed into the hands of Mr. B. H.
Richardson an editor of well known
ability. Under his management it is
gaining new popularity and is a credit
to the Queen city of the Chattahoo¬

are replete with interesting matter
and it is worth its price to all its sub¬

The recent Quebec disaster was as
sudden and unexpected as the Johns

various avocations, a landslide came
crushing down from the mountain and
forty-eight persons were buried under
the ruins. Loborershave been at work
removing the debris, and recovering
the corpses. A living man was dug

It is a matter of surprise that the
girls’ industrial school bill has met
with so much opposition V in the house.
Few „ bills 1 have been oefore that .... hen- ,

port. All approve of schools of tech
nology for girtaT hey., and have not our
helpless who are so often
thrown upon their own resources for
a support—an equal right to be con¬
sidered? Is it not better that they
should be taught some useful indus¬
try by which they may earn a living if
necessary, than be left to grow up like
hot-house plants that the cold blasts
of adversity will wither? Will it not
be better for them as wives and moth
ers, if they are taught to be useful,
self reliant women? They are just as
much entitled to the benefits derived
from training in an industrial school
as the boys, and our legislators should
accord them such protection and
dependence as this school would give
them.

the house. A wise measure.
The State Road lease bill and Dr.

The discussion oi the educational
question cotinues. It is not higher
education which is the need of the
hour, but the education of the masses.
Lay your foundation on which to
build.
A large factory for the manufact¬
ure of pine straw bagging by a new
process is to be built at Jasper, Ga.
It is said that this bagging can be
made at a cost of 5 cents a yard
weighing two pounds to the yard and
will be as good if not better than jute.
There is . much , discussion .. . about , . the .,
farmer s interest. Here is a model:—
There is a farmer m this county who
has never bought a bushel of corn, a
pound of meat, lard, flour or soap, ex
cept for toilet purposes, since the war
a*d now has a years supply of all
these things on hand. He makes
P^nty to do him and to spare, and
makes good cotton crop, besides. He
commenced farming on poor land af
ter the war, and be made a success of

that “there is more m the man than

Mb. Editor:—S omewhere in my
miscellaneous reading these beautiful
and truthful lines were found:—
•'If you sit down at set oi sun.
And count the acts that you have done
And, counting, find
One self-denying deed, one word
That eased the heart of him that heard
One glance, most kind,
That fell like sunshine where it went
Then you may count that day well
spent.
Bu 1 if through all the livelong day
You've cheered no heart ay yea or
nay; If through it all
You’ve nothing done that y -mean trace
That brought the sunshine to one
face. No, act most small,
That Mped .omo ,oul, and nothing
Then count that day J at wor.e than

Duty done is its own reward, and
really there is no happiness on any
other basis. If you hope for kind
ness you must be kind. If you would
have friends, show yourself friendly.
That man or woman, who never tried
at least to cast some sunshine on the
pathway of others, is to be deep y
pitied. 1 here can be but little it any
real sunshine in their own life, lhe
way to be happy yourself it to make
others happy, lhe laws of com pen
sation pervades all nature, lourenp
the fruit of the seed you sow. Man is
the architect of his own fortune. He
lives in the house of his own building,
and if it be a hovel, he has made it
SO.
It is said that when Henry Wads¬
worth Longfellow was a professor in
a college he gave as a motto t j his
pupils, “live up to the best that is m
you,” and if this was done, the sum
of human happiness world be vastly
increased. It is said that the late
Alexander H. Stephens, (who died
while governor of Georgia,) during his
life-time, educated 150 boys and 50
girls, giving them a collegiate educa
tion. The spirit of education Is abroad
in the land, now who will imitate
Gov. Stephens’ noble example and
pick up worthy sons or daughters and
send to the West Georgia A. & M.
college at Hamilton, and thus do a
great good for yourself and others.
The expense of a liberal education is
not now near so great as in the day
of Gov., Stephens. Qov. Stephens’
example is worthy of all imitation.
Who will follow it? There are a num¬
ber of men in Harris county who can
do this without injury to themselves
or families who will show themselves
to be patriots and lovers of their race?

The Incurable cured.
A Remarkable Statement from a
Well-known Citizen of
South Carolina.
Cancer is hereditary in my family,
an aunt on each side having died
from this dreadful disease. In each
instance the cancer was located in
identically the same position that
mine first made its appearance—just
below the left eye and extending
down the left cheek bone and nose.
I was attended by the best physicians
but the case continued to grow worse
under their trea.ment, and no hope
of a cure could be given by them, they
said: “I had better have my affairs
for this life and the next arranged,
for the cancer was liable to strike a
vital organ at any moment, and at
once bleed me to death. About this
time, 1886 , I met with Mr. Shirley,
living near Due West, whose cancer
was being rapidly cured by using
Swift’s Specific (S. S. S.) 1 then gave

ed taking S. S. S., after using *he third
bottle, I discovered that the scab had
fallen off, and that those sharp dart¬
ing pains, so characistic of the cancer
had ceased, and the discharge was
very profuse. In a few days it began
to heal rapidly, and soon dried up.
By the time I had exhausted the fifth

bottle there was nothing left but the
scar where the cancer had been, and
I was a well man. The cure effected *
in my case is considered by my neigh

clearly demonstrates the fact that S
S. S. DOES CURE CANCER. Swift’s
Specific is a boon to suffering human

myself will be convinced of its virtues.
