Last Sunday was a raw day fo;
church going and the crowds at¬
tending church and Sunday school
were not very large. This Sunday
and Saturday before forms the reg¬
ular monthly conference ’of the
Methodist Church here.
On Sunday mornirg the pastor’s
text was. Behold I stand at the
door and knock. Rev. o;*20.
These are the very words of our
Savior. "Christ has a right to knock
and he has a right to enter into our
hearts'
He knocks as our redeemer, as
our preserver, as our Savior- lie
knocks as our friend, He cornea
to claim that which rightfully be¬
longs to him—our hearts—will we
veild?
He knocks through his servants
in the church through Ins preachers,
through the Bible, through Chr's
tian literature.
A preacher may : sbor for a long
time without seeing any visible re¬
sult from his labors, but if the good
seeds of the gospel have been sown
God will take care of the results
One man may sow and another reap,
but God will take care of the sowing

A Visit to sue Uncle CAry
Willis.
On last Friday morning through
the courtesy!of Mr. Eugene Al¬
mond, the Editor loft the hospita¬
ble home of the latter, whose guest
he was, to pay a visit to the bedside
of one of God’s venerable servants,
—verily a father in Isreal.
For about four years this good
aged pilgrim has been confined
most of bis time to ins room and
a great part of Ins time to his bed,
a sufferer all this time.
Rev. (J, C- Willis was born in
1809 and is now 85 years of age.
lie has real e l a I. rge family of
children and grand children and
has Baptized 34 o' Ins children and
immediate family connections.
He joined Bethel church when
quite young and has al.vays held
his membership there, never hav ng
been a member of any other church
For more tlion fifty years he has
faithfully served this church as its
pastor and is still considered its
senior pastor. 1 It seems to be the
dearest spot on earth to linn, and
] ie has expressed a desire to have it
as liis last resting place.
This dear brother has baptized
hundreds of believers and minister
e d comfort to thousands of the
sal ,its. He is perfectly 1 resigned to
God’s will concerning him, ready
to K 0 at any time and yet ready to
gu ff er ant l p, abide God’s time,
It is truly rofreshina; to visit the
bedside rl OHO HO liClU" the gat^S of
heaven.
The case of Bro. Whim’ protract¬
ed illness is \ puzzle to all the doc¬
tors. Many times have his children
been summoned to his bedside to
witness bis death, but lias as many
times rallied and recovered. His
family arc perfectly resigned to
God’s will, end his good wife prays
that she mav only be spared strength
enough to nurs him to the end.
A Dreadful Killing.
On Tuesday morning about sev¬
en o’clock, Mr Will Swint shot and
instantly killed Mr. Sonnie Pearce.
These parties lived on adjoining
farms and they h d a dispute, v.e
learn, about a land lino, There
was no witness to the killing and
Mr Swint made good his escape.
What makes the matter still
worse is the fact that Mr Pearce
and Mr bwint were brothers-in-law.
Mr. Pearce was an unmarried
man of about forty years of age,
and lived with hb widowed mother.
He has many friends in Harris
county who will deeply regret to
learn of this unfortuneate affair.
Since writing the above we learn
that Mr. Swint expects to give him¬
self up at the proper time and
stand his trial.
