H» MILTON, GA APR 20, 1894
Cleii. 15, A- Evans
A at Hamilton.
Gen. Evans arrived in Hamilton
on last Thursday eveirng and was
met at the train by a large number
of hi< warn friends and given a
cordial welcome -nto our midst.
The General spent what time h<
could on the front veranda of the
hotel striking hands with his old
f lends and comrades- On the next
morning, before the General could
get through with his breakfast bis
friends < rotvded into the dining
room whore he was, to spend a f*"
moments in pleasant renunisenees.
It was quite a difTrrnlt matter lot
the General to get a few moments
to himself in his private room on
Friday morning,itroriler to glance col¬
f vor his papers and perhaps to
let t bin thoughts for the speech In¬
was to make at 11 o’clock.
A few moments before 11 o dock
there was a general rush for ike
rourt house and il wan not long be
fore standing room wis at a premt
inn 'i’ltc General had started from
the hotel to the court bouse, some
ono bad seen him make the start
and lence the rush. Wien the
General reached the court house,
it was with difficulty U-at he made
his way lo flic stand, 11 was a
perfect ovation for Ifanii ton. If
has been many a day since there
was so much etithnsiasm here as
was created bv Gen. l-.vuus speech.
'I he General was introduced in
a very appropriate rnatim-r by Hon.
J{. A. Ruhm-11.
ll»t began by tha. king Mr Uns
sdl for bis complimentary remarks,
i.nd thanking the people of Ifntnil
lon for the very hcaity reception
he l.a-1 teecivcd.
I am otr tny n .t-ve noil. Having
been born in Stewart County nent¬
ity this here J am at home. I am
delighted to -q>< ak to Georgians, i
have travele d all over thin state
from border to border and 1 have
learned to love Georgia, If the
business men of this sta-c civoo-se to
defeat me, I Jin not dishonored.
1 come to put in a plea this morn¬
ing for Georgia’s unity. There is
no reason why City should be array¬
ed against country or section, a
gninhf section or classes against the
masses [applaine]. No reason why
we should not be in accord. If we
have differences let ns adjust them.
Let us deal with our opponents in
love. Looking to tire right and
left keep we see ft.ltos reputation in ducord0| for If w<
up our peace
and harmony, we shall attract both
capital arnf {migration. Let us de¬
Vito our politics as Georgian* to a
h ,’lK.r plane. There are just as
big he tried noble brained men as
there over was with-in onr (grand
old st itc. Why should we not re¬
produce such men as Calhouns CVay
and W«l*st«r?
There nre questions that have
forced themselves upon ns for
which the democratic party is not
responsible. Insist upon the carry¬
ing out of the platform nut if this
whole country is redeemed [apjd.J
The wise men of the country are

pleading just for an empty thing.
If there are differences among tw
these differences a r e not so much

ronld not effect these National dif¬
ferences, only indirectly by the
prominence of tny position. Still
you have a tight to know my po il

IVe want a tariff for revenue. Wo
have no need for a protective tariff.
\Ve want money. It must be abso¬

is disgraced, and the people deceiv

and the money is worth 50 cents
in the dolfar you pet only 5 cents
f r your cotton. The government
must not fool us. Every dollar
must be as good as any other dollar
The currency of the country must
l»e in column sufficient for our uses.
It is possible now to produce a fi¬
nancial panic, it is surprising that
the United States did not go into
the bands of a receiver last year,
