On the Hith inst., Dr. John A.
Broadus passed peacefully away at
liis home in Louisville, Kentucky.
The name of Dr. Broadus is almost ;i
house-hold word throughout the Uni¬
ted States and I’.is fame extends be¬
yond the seas, ll r. Broadus was
born January 21, 1S27. lie had oc¬
cupied a chair in the Southern Bap¬
tist Theological Si miliary, now loca¬
ted Louisville, Kentucky, since 1S59,
and was its eilieient 1’resident at the
iime of l\is death. During one ses¬
sion in the late war he lectured faith¬
fully to one solitary student for some
months. His book, “The Prepratiun
Delivery of Sermons” is used by
many different denominations as a
text book. Truly il may be said of
him, “lie being dead yet speaketh.”
Tuesday was the last day for re¬
turns for the April term of court, if
being just twenty dajs before ia art.
As an evidence of the prosperity of
Harris county the returns are very
light.
