A Spider-Web Telephone, A gentleman was watching some spi. ders, when it occurred to him to try what effect the sound of a tuning fork would have upon them. He suspected that they would take it for the buzzing of a fly. He selected a large, ugly spider, that had been feasting on flies for two months. The spider was at one end of its web. Sounding the fork, the man touched a thread at the other side, and w'atched the result. Mt. Spider hud the buzzing sound conveyed to him over bis tele¬ phone wires, but how was he to know on which particular wire it the was web traveling? He ran to the centre of very i quickly, and felt all around until he touched the thread against the other end of which the fork was sounding; then, taking another thread along, just as a man would take an extra piece of rope, he ran out to the fork and sprang upon it. Then he retreated a little way, and l°° k T at Tll< ‘ f °T T was P. uzzl ed. He had expected to « nnd a buzzing fly. He got. 0 n the fork again, and danced with delight. Evidently the sound was music to him. Queer Patents. One of the most original patents is an automatic hath tub, which starts the hot and cold water at a given moment in the morning to which it has been set, main¬ tains exactly the right temperature of it by graduating the flow of water, rings a bell when all is ready, and, two minutes later, suddenly drops the sleeper’s pillow about a foot and turns him “chicken out. Amoflg hop¬ other odd inventions are ples,” which walk the chicken right out of trie garden when she tries to scratch; “the bee moth excluder,” which auto¬ matically shuts up all the beehives when the hens go to roost; “educatidnal bal¬ loon,” a toy balloon with a map of the world on its surface; side-hill annihila- tors,”—stilts to fit on the down hill legs of a horse when lie is ploughing along a side hill; and of the ‘‘hen surpriser,” laid a device that drops the newly with egg in¬ through the bottom of the nest, tent to beguile and wheedle the hen into at once laying another. Mere Flower Shows. Nowadays, a house of mourning be¬ comcs ' on the day of the funeral, a sort floral exhibition. * In many instances the l )0rsous indulging m these displays ( . an i| [-afford the expense, as the unpaid florist and undertaker can testify. It is well enough to have a floral wreath or cross, or a few cut flowers at a funeral, The other day I attended a funeral, and, although the deceased was a poor laborer who had worked for a dollar and a half a day, the flowers covering his casket must have cost over a hundred dollars. It would have been better to have given his poor widow the money than spent it for useless flowers. This is an evil that should be remedied.
