Work For Leisure Hours.
Fancy work in. these days means far

covered with beads that were sown with
tine silk on the finest possible canvas,
occasional specimens of which still re¬
main as heirlooms—or when “ottomans"
covered impossible with coarser canvas unnatural displayed
roses, or still more
dogs and cats. For the last few years,
everything in our houses lias been so
covered foundations and decorated, that good find; honest but
were not easy to
with it all a great deal of
beauty has been introduced, and
much that was ugly hidden from slight.
beautiful Every season brings new and more and
materials into the market;
although some of these materials are doth very of
expensive,-'a small quantity like
gold or cloth of silver, both being w ide
materials, goes a great way. These beau¬
tiful glistening fabrics are used as foun¬
dations to be richly embroidered, and
also as applique decorations; and in both
ways the effect is very rich and elegant,
A very pretty and less expensive table-
cover can be made in scarf shape of a
piece of double width velours, the quan¬
tity purchased to be merely the width of
the scarf. The ends of a thin, embroidered
Turkish towel should be cutoff to leave
a little space beyond the embroidery,
and the ground between the figures darned
with floss silk of the same color as the
velours, but in a much lighter shade.
Thus, supposing the velours to be old red,
the darning silk should be old pink; and
gold the handsome effect, with the mixed glint of with the
thread which is always
these Eastern embroideries, is really sur¬
prising. When the darning is completed scarf
the bands should be sewed to the
at a distance of about half their width
from each end, and the joining concealed
by a very narrow gold braid. Line with
old pink sateen; and tusselled fringe on
the ends is a matter of choice. The cost
of this scarf need not be much. Photo¬
graph cases are much prettier than the
ancient albums, and ingenuity can be ex¬
ercised upon these useful trifles to almost
any extent.
Frugality and Fortune.
It is stated that one of the richest men
in this country, whose wealth is esti¬
mated at over $100,000,000, breakfasts
only on boiled eggs, eats only bacon and
liver for lunch, and dines on a cut of
roast beet and a potato, washed down
with water. Probably if he had been
in the practice of breakfasting on quail on
t oa . ’ Omening 0,1 terr-inin ttriapin, an and dini.m Hm i n
on canvas-back duck and champagne, ho
might not have the $100,000,000 to call
his own. Such things have occurred be¬
fore, in the history of wealth and those
who have amassed it, don't you know.
When we are the objects of flattery, or
witness its being administered to others,
we should examine and consider well the
character and the circumstances of the
person offering it, in order to judge if the
act be an offense against good morals, and
if so, how far is i^ so. If it appears to
proceed from base motives, let it be
treated with open contempt; if from the
wish for a return pass it as a weakness;
if from good nature or excessive appreci¬
ation, excuse it for the sake of its amia¬
ble source.
