FROM TAYLOR.
Since the extreme wet season
the farmers in this .
communs,}’
have b^en very busy on their
farms, and great quantities of the
soil has bee: broken in prepara-
tion for th . coming crop. There
is but littic encouragement for one
at this period.
We think there is suffici r.t evi-
dence now before us to convince
the inteligent farm?r that a change
of program is necessary. Whiise
we are not prepared lor a direct
change we will move in that di¬
rection as fast as our means w ill
admit. There is not as much
small grain sown as si - , cfcjld be, it
is caused by the diought last fall,
and the uncertainty of rite sowing
and, moreover, the wet January’
which caused s ich delay as to give
the farmer doubts as to February
sowing. Wo are inclined to think
that sin all grain vriii push our
Stock ruisiry which is now the im*
portant question, to have our
smoke houses af home, for every
thinking man can plainly see that
we cannot make cotton at prtsen
time to 1 uy meat and corn on time
a
Ime ... we have , , been doing , . for c years
pant.
It is indeed distressing to see
the people who congicgate in the
city of Macon daily appealing to
the Macon merchants for help,
i have been there and seen the
fact. Men who own productive
lands, many of which is new cn;
cumbered by loans ^nd other
moGga^es seemed upon them
while cott n was 10 cents per
pound. Now the question arises
where is the hope for the faimer
to extricate himself with 6 cents
cotton, when it is a conceded Sact
that it ttk"S 8 cents to produce it.
And in many cases nure. Will
we not stop here and consider
where we are drifting, or will we
still go on as long as the factors
will take a i origage on a poor
mule or a wagon or a piece of
land. Is this net eviedee enough
to convince us ol where we arc
chitting.
