THE RECEIVERSHIP FIGHT
Of the Atlanta atnl Florida Railroad
Before Judge Speer.
The Atlanta and Florida receivership
case will be fought out before Judge
Speer on the ground of jurisdiction. directed The
petition of Captain Garrett, to
Judge Emory Speer, of the southern dis¬
trict of Georgia, has been finished bv the
attorneys. In this petition the plea of
jurisdiction is set up. This embraces
the plea of possession.
The facts are set down in the petition,
beginning with the first move in the case,
which was made on January 9th 1 st, and
following up the subsequent events to the
final decision of Judge Marshall J. Clarke
in the matter. The petition will be carried
to Macon and tendered to Judge Speer,
and hearing wi 1 probably be had at
o.ce.
In ihe meantime Receiver Plant has
charge of the road and is running things.
He has filed his report ns receiver with
the clerk of tie United States court at
Macon. lie reports that the sum of
$3,205 hack pay due to the employes of
the road for February work has been or¬
dered paid; that Captain T. W. Garrett
has been appointed superintendent of the
road at a salary of $200 per month, and
that he found upon taking charge $2,-
980.34 in cash.
LOUISIANA COTTON.
The Production of the State as Re¬
ported by Census Ofllce.
The ci nsus office has issued the pre¬
liminary statistics of cotton production
in Louisiana. The acreage in cotton in
that state in the year 1889 90 was 1,270,-
885; the number of bales produced, and
659 583, not including linters, the
average yield per acre, fifty-two hun¬
dredths of a bale.
The figures reported at the tenth census
for the year 1879-80 wire as follows:
Aon age, 8G4.787; number of bales, 508,
569, end yield per acre, fifty-nine hun¬
dredths of a bale. The figures now issued
are subject to a slight modification in the
final report, which will also include cot¬
ton se<d and other branches of the cot¬
ton investigation which the census office
is engaged in.
A London cablegram of Monday say9:
Flintshire, in Wale-, appears to be the
only place where the order of the Miners’
federation to quit work has not been
obeyed by thfe members of the associa¬
tion. The latest estimates of the num¬
ber of miners who are now idle place the
figure at 350, 00. Owing to the closing
down of other industries because of the
strike fully 200,000 men in other em¬
ployments have been thrown out of work.
