It is a strange and foolish fit of passion which leads a man to at¬ tempt knocking a horse down with his fist. In fact, in most cases where men boat, animals about, they dis play less judgement than the animal they abuse. 'An animal has sense and apprehends danger the same as men. A man will, where he has an average a mount of good sense, pro¬ ceed cautiously or turn aside from an object at which he becomes affrighted. An animal also appre¬ hends danger and naturally fears to approach. Why force h:tu on an ob jeet before he has time to recognize what it is? Why try to make the animal see an object as you see it, or use your brain under any-given cir¬ cumstance? It is veritable foolisli ness tinless the animal were endoov ed with as much sense as yourself. Occasionally you find an animal more rational than the man that drives him. It would be nothing but right then for the animal to drive man. SOUND ADVICE. The New Orleans Times-Domo rat gives a whole volume of sound -advice in the production: following editoriaj on cotton The price of cotton today makes it remunerative, and this improvement has made itself gen erally felt in all lines of business. Let us hope that it will not have the effect that some of the south CVD papers anticipate of bringing about an excessive acreage next season, another big crop and sub¬ sequent low and unprofitable pri ces. Tive fear is expressed that the southern farmer, having done well with his cotton this year, may be tempted to increase the acreage next seasqn, hoping to Jo sill better, not taking into con¬ sideration the fact that a^l his neighbors may do likewise. The fact that cotton was being over-produced has been recogniz¬ ed for some time past. The preached long sermons on the subject, but it was only when tiv farmers began to feel the evil ef • Meets of itis “all-cotton” polwy, when all the profits of cultivation disappeared, that they reduced fet - « has enabled «>«“ greatly increase their other and particularly their food crops, sav ing themselves eonsidepable out¬ lay for the latter and bringing in much better returns; and second¬ ly, the cotton cron cost less to produce, but at the same time will bring nearly the same amount as previous excessive crop^ have clone. This experience ought to con¬ vince them of what is the best policy to pursue. It will be a great mistake to. return to the •‘all-cotton” system, even if the staple remains at the same price, whuh it, of course, will not do if the acrage and crop are greater. That system will insure a return to the depression which has pre¬ vailed in the agricultural circles of the roilth for the past few years. The farmers will be putting m their mops in a few months. Let us hope that when this is done we will hear that they fully un¬ derstand the situation, have profited by their past experience and intend to diversify their crops, keep the cotton, acrage down, and thus secure better re¬ turns, both for that and all other products.
