PHYSICAL ^ATIGUE ,
Doe* It Increase the Diseased? Susceptibility <4
Contagious
It has long been accepted that
the physical fatigue greatly infectious increases
susceptibility to dis¬
eases. Two French physician*
have recently been endeavoring' by
means of experiments, to confirm
this view. They subjected a num
ber of white rats to severe exer¬
cise (running in a rotating cage)
for four consecutive days, for
seven hours each day. Eight of
these tirod out animals ware in¬
oculated with attenuated anthrax
virus, tour animals in a normal
condition of health being inocula¬
ted with the same virus at the
same time, in order to serve as a
standard of comparison. The re¬
sult was, that seven of the eight
animals series belonging while to the all first
succumbed, the
animals of the second series sur¬
vived. The authors thus explain
the curious tendency of
to break out among soldiers dur¬
ing great manoeuvres and on cam¬
paign, soldier and they rendered urge that suscepitibia many a
a is
to disease by fatigue who would
have otherwise escaped. •
Why Women Are Hot Humorous.
A writer in the open letter de¬
partment of the ctirrent “Century”
asks why in literature there are no
lady humorists. He then goes on
to answer his question childhood by explain- finds
ing that from man
the sawdust dropping out of
everything, and soon discovers oho
worthlessness of much that passes
for valuable. Therefore he learns
to smile and sav: “is it not ab¬
surd?” instead of allowing his pas¬
sion for something to adore oyer
ride his growing desire for truth,
But, oh. the other hand, a woman's
idols are so much a part of h r
life that when they are broken t • e
• cannot snap her lingers, nor seek
mirth as an avenue of escape,
Women may possibly grow salmi
cal, but satire is only a form of
humor. When life ceases to be in
some way holy, or at any rate
ideal, then woman’s creative fac
ulty ceases,” says the writer. “Sho
ends where man’s talent as a hu¬
morist begins.”
