A mothetiy deed, was that act

led too, for it filled our heart
with memories of a once
and contented home, now dis-
solved by the two sad twins of
destruction—Time and Death.
It is a mistaken idea to think
that one’s independence in mat¬
ters is a manifestation of con¬
ceit. Those who are not suffi
cientit conversant with the es¬
sentials of the two to discrimi¬
nate, can spend time wisely in in¬
vestigation.
The.C orrespondent is informed
that iiiere is no specified number
of hours for daily instruction in
the common schools of the county.
If this is correct, we suggest that

by the teachers, and would be a
protection to those who are assail
by unjust and unfounded
criticisms. There are some who
think a child ought to study ten
jessons a day, and receive instruc¬
tion from, “Early morn to dewy
eve,” and never have a moments
recreation. If those who take
this erroneous view of the matter
would use a little common sens -1 ,
they would very readily see the
fallacy of their positions. It is a
mistaken idea that so much time
should be spent in the school room
and so main 7 -studies pursued, un
less indeed the object is to de
stroy the mind, bring about n er
vous prostration of the student,
and graduate him for the asylum,
instead of a useful and active
life.
