Citizens Balancing Act
I listened attentively to the
highly skilled Navy Pilot (in
actuality a Safety Officer)
give his presentation; a por
tion in which he explained
that we can become com
pletely safe — we can leave
all the planes on the ground,
and there will not be a crash
or incident!! But neither
would there be any progress!
He was in his flight suit and
would be taking off in min
utes. To this day, none would
be sure of what happened
- but engine failure before
becoming airborne caused
him to eject at ground level.
Conditions were not right,
and he died at the scene. I
remembered his words! That
was 1961.
This accident comes to
mind in 2013; as we race
fervently to complete the
"balancing act” of Safety and
Privacy!! We know that both
will not (cannot) coexist to
perfection. So we are called
upon, in multiplied thousands
of circles, to decide which
will take priority. All loyal
Americans are substantially
aware of the predicament
— though differences for a
"fix” plague us on a daily
basis. Will we bankrupt all
sensibility in our efforts to
locate the culprit who is bent
on destruction? Or will we
cling steadfast to a Constitu
tion that promises - indeed
provides for a privacy that
often places us in a lurch!!!
Too many cowboy movies
have confused us - where we
simply take for granted that
we "can cut off the criminal
at the pass!” While we most
certainly have moved into
a world of technology — it
may just be that we have
complicated all issues to the
extent that both Safety and
Privacy are meeting with
demise.
The intelligence gather
ing forces have recently
invaded some virgin terri
tory, in a supposed stint that
will ’’gamer the guilty” with
promises that our privacy is
still intact. The problem is,
nobody believes their story
— and are not willing to hang
around while they prove
it! Numerous lawsuits are
being filed in an effort to ease
the ’’establishment pressure”
while we sort out all the pros
and cons! With friends like
we have, we don’t need any
enemies!! Debate is over
— the watch dog is at the
gate — and things may get
worse before they get bet
ter!! America is not ac
climated for such intrusion
upon private lives — we have
fought wars to prevent it.
That is not to say that anyone
is purposely creating fertile
ground for terrorism — we
will cooperate with all legiti
mate and practical measures
- -but we will not trade the
sanctity of individual pursuits
for the whims of political
aspirants or the bids for dis
traction! We Americans are
not dumb, as some suppose
— we readily submit that
both ’’danger and darkness”
are haunting prospects - -but
we will not acquiesce to an
inferior state of affairs!
Mature leaders are called
upon to handle this inequity!
