THE GEORGIA POST 3
Jesus’ last dying
thought: His Mother
This past Mother’s Day was
a special day for Beverly. Since
banned gatherings had prevent
ed Beverly and me from visiting
or being visited by our children
and grandchildren, we did ob
serve Mother’s Day using
Skype protocol. Skype is
a program developed by
the Microsoft Corpora
tion that allows people in
different locales to con
verse and view each oth
er on computer screens.
While Beverly and I live
in Peach County, both pQMncDmgc
of our sons live in North rUNUtmiMUa
Georgia. Yet, we talked forBilly Powell
almost an hour with our
sons, daughters-in-law,
and grandchildren.
In Jesus’ time, Mother’s Day
was not observed. It came 19
centuries later in 1908 when
a lady named Anna Jarvis
organized the first Mother’s Day
celebration at her Methodist
church. By 1912, many states
had adopted Mother’s Day.
In 1914, President Woodrow
Wilson officially established
the second Sunday in May as
Mother’s Day. In my humble
estimation, every day should be
Mother’s Day!
As we continue to celebrate
our mothers, can you imagine
the agony that Mary experi
enced as Jesus was arrested,
tried for blasphemy, beaten
with whips, nailed to the cross,
and suffered unbearable agony.
The horrific punishment that
Jesus suffered for human sin
was predicted eight centuries
earlier by the prophet Isaiah
who wrote: “He was wounded
for our transgressions...by His
stripes we are healed... the Lord
has laid on Him the iniquity of
us all.”
In John’s Gospel account,
it is evident that Jesus dearly
loved His mother, Mary. Even
though Jesus had undergone
six agonizing hours on the
cross, suffering severe
breathing difficulties,
sustaining unbearable
pain, experiencing
unquenched thirst,
and having the sins
of mankind heaped
upon Him, his last
dying thought was the
welfare of His mother.
The scripture states:
“When Jesus saw His
mother (Mary) and
His favorite disciple
(John) with her (standing by
the cross), He said to His moth
er, “This man is now your son.”
Then He said to the disciple,
“She is now your mother.” From
then on, that disciple took Mary
into his own home.” Within
moments, Jesus said, “It is
finished” and expired.
The Bible never states that
every woman should be a moth
er. However, the lives of those
who choose motherhood will
never be the same again. Even
though Jesus was a criminal
in the eyes of the Jews and the
high priests (Jn 19:7), He would
always be Mary’s son and she
would always love Him without
reservation. This stanza from
Rudyard Kipling’s poem aptly
describes Jesus’ feelings for his
dear mother: “If I were hanged
on the highest hill...I know
whose love would follow me...
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’
mine!”

Boulder, Colorado still cries
Boulder cries indeed!
For the past twenty four
years, the city of Boulder,
Colorado has lived with the
ruthless homicide of six year
old beauty queen Jon Benet
Ramsey.
On Christmas Day, 1996
the mangled body of this
tiny princess was discovered
by her father John Ramsey,
in the basement of the spa
cious residence of John and
his wife Patricia.
Obvious evidence proved
beyond any doubt that she
was strangled, sexually mo
lested, and battered almost
beyond recognition. Numer
ous charges and indictments
were levelled on multiple
parties
(in
cluding

but to
this
day, no
one has
been
con
victed of the crime. The
wealthy John, an Executive
with the computer company,
Access Graphics, was a
prime suspect; as was
his wife.
Extensive investiga
tions have been held
with only the report
of a discovered, yet
unidentified DNA
from the scene. The
city, and the nation,
would be shattered and Daniel
stunned by this sense- yy Gatlyn

The skies were overcast,
and the wind was cold; as
Ben Scott and I exited the
Interstate, and the moun
tains seemed to whisper,
“I’ve got a secret”, and one
that will be held for years to
come. I was

My column
was written, relayed—and
published in March of 1998-
—two years after the tragic
event.
The unbelievable
scenario was (and
is) troubling, since
multiple parties
were present—
since highly trained
professionals viewed
t _ ! _ mountains of evi-
G F ACT0 R dence—and yet the
guilty individual
(or parties) could
not be determined.
It is likely that we will never
know who committed this
dreadful offense. Jon Benet
is buried in Marietta, Geor
gia.
The world goes on, and it
is almost as if the tiny tot,
and her demise; has been
totally dismissed. That this
nation—the city of Boulder-
—the state of Colorado, can
simply toss the crime—all
evidence, involved individ
uals—accusations—indict
ments—all interests (if you
will)—and walk away, is
beyond reason.
I am only one, and far
removed from the time or
scene—but I care about what
has (and is) happening.
Nothing! Christmas Day,
I996, will go down in infamy
as this most hideous crime
was carried out upon the
youngest of four children.
Jon Benet was programmed
almost from day one, as a
contestant in beauty stints,
and became very adept.
Since the horrible inci
dent in Boulder two decades
earlier, Patsy Ramsey has
published the book “The
Death of Innocence” (Am
azon—2000), which gives
an in depth defense for the
Ramseys in the matter and
has succumbed to cancer
(2006). John Ramsey has
married the third time to
Jan Rousseau; (his first
being to Lucinda Lou Pasch
—1966-78); after a lengthy
romantic episode with Beth
Holloway, mother of Natalie
Holloway; missing teen from
the Island of Aruba. The
tragedy of Jon Benet should
not be forgotten.
