THE GEORGIA POST 3
Racing with a
U.S. President
PONDERINGS
When we were younger, Bev
erly and I ran in many road races
on the “Run and See Georgia”
circuit. We traveled to races
from central to south Georgia
and back to north Georgia.
Beverly ranked as one of
the top runners in Georgia
in her age group.
Once we traveled to
Plains, Georgia, to run a
to-K race (6.2 miles). I
remember going out fast
and attempting to get
ahead of my age-group
competitors. Two miles
into the race, I looked back Billy Powell
and saw four people closing
in. I was running at a fast
opening pace and going faster
would sap any reserve I had, so I
watched as they passed by. One
was President Jimmy Carter.
Three Secret Service agents were
running with him. Since Carter
was it years older that I, the
thought occurred to me, ‘I can’t
let that older man beat me,’ so
I picked up the pace and stayed
in view of President Carter as he
reached the midpoint and headed
back to the finish line. In the final
mile, I tried to close the gap, but
the President upped his pace
and pulled further ahead. Since I
was unable to overtake him and
quickly running out of steam, I
came in behind President Carter.
Before the trophy ceremony, I
had the opportunity to speak to
President Carter. I told him how
he burned me out. The President
asked me to tell the assembled
crowd what I had told him. Since
I won an age group trophy, I was
given the opportunity to speak
when I went up to receive my
award. So, I related how Pres
ident Carter had blown
past me in the race and
how I marveled at
his stamina. After the
trophy ceremony, I
had the opportunity to
speak with him again.
He’s a congenial and
personable individual.
President Carter is now
95.1 bet he still remem
bers that race.
The Apostle Paul
spoke of another race
in Philippians 3.14: “I
press on toward the goal for the
prize of the high calling of God
in Christ Jesus.” Paul likened his
quest to serve Christ to an athletic
contest. Paul’s life was turned up
side down when he encountered
the risen Lord in a blinding light
on the road to Damascus. From
drat day forth, he went from
persecutor of Christians to the
greatest spokesman for Christ the
world has ever known. In his race
toward the high calling of Christ,
he suffered many hardships to
preach the gospel. They included
imprisonment, beatings, stoning
and shipwrecks. Similarly, living
the Christian life requires disci
pline, effort and hardships. The
prize awaiting those who cross
the finish line is the summons to
inherit eternal life.

Remove not the landmarks
There is Biblical admoni
tion (if not commandment)
that distinctly warns of “re
moving the old landmarks”!
(Proverbs 23:10) First of all,
this commentary applies to
the theological, or spiritu
al plane—but from a very
practical viewpoint, it would
also have exceptional con
notation toward the secular
dimensions!
Stones and markers have
been utilized since day one,
to specify boundaries—or
in commemoration of feats,
battles, or causes! Not all
of such “dates or deeds”
were virtuous—but all were

One can easily re
view the innumerable
items (and accompany

the ancient pyramids,
to the Halls of Mont

to Peoria—the scrolls,
the books, the flags, th e Q an j fi |

In our present
