THE GEORGIA POST 3
Hiding under John
Henry’s bed
During Jesus’ ministiy, little
children were brought to Him
so He could bless them. The
disciples scolded the children
for intruding. This troubled the
Savior, so He rebuked the
disciples, saying: “Let the
little children come to me,
and do not hinder them,
for such is the kingdom
of God. Those who do not
receive the kingdom as a
little child will not enter
it.” After saying this,
Jesus took the little chil
dren into his aims and
blessed them. Then He
issued a chilling warning:
“Whoever causes one of
these little ones to sin, it would
be better for him to have a great
millstone fastened around his
neck and to be drowned in the
depth of the sea.”
Jesus treated children with
respect, dignity and affection.
During His ministiy, Jesus
healed children from life-threat
ening diseases; He cast out de
mons in some and raised others
from the dead.
Jesus’ great love for chil
dren inspired a Baptist min
ister named Clarence Herbert
Woolston (1856-1927) to
compose a children’s hymn
entitled: “Jesus Loves the Little
Children.” You may have sung
it dming Vacation Bible School
or at Sunday school. It goes
like this: “Jesus loves all the
children of the world, red and
yellow, black and white, they are
precious in His sight.” Its words
embrace eveiy race and eveiy
color.

When I was a youngster
growing up in Perry duiing the
1940s, eveiy Friday around
noon, an African- American
man named John Hemy
and his wife Annie
traveled up Ball Street
(dirt road then) in
a one-horse wagon
selling fresh vegeta
bles from their garden.
One day, we invited
them to eat lunch with
us. I remember sitting
by John Hemy. I asked
PONDERINGS him about his mule
and how he raised the
watermelons, turnip
greens, com, okra,
peas and snap beans.
Months later, John Hemy
and Annie saved me and two
of my Mends, James and Olin
Logue, from a hostile, pursuing
gang. John Hemy hid us under
his bed. When the mean boys
arrived and asked if we were
there, John Hemy responded,
“We haven’t seen them.” So, the
gang departed and we scooted
back home. Some years later,
I went to thank John Hemy
again. His house was gone.
Hopefully, I will see him and
Annie in heaven. They saved
our hides from a certain beating,
I close with his powerful
message: “If any one says I love
God but hates his brother, he is
a liar; for he who does not love
his brother whom he has seen,
cannot love God whom he has
not seen.”
