THE GEORGIA POST 3
Good sermon,
Entebbe, Uganda
wasn’t it, Billy?
Fifty years ago, I attended
church services with my young
son, Bill, and his cousin, David
Bowden (while driving back
home, I always let David and
Bill take turns steering my
car). David, Bill and I sat
on the second row of the
church. A member at the
church, after making a
report to the congrega
tion, sat in front of us on
the first row. Soon after
the preacher began his
message, this member
was sound asleep. When
the preacher concluded
his sermon, the congre-

the tobacco. He got the mes
sage. From that day forth, the
man never snored again.
Acts 20 records a young man
named Eutychus falling to
his death while Paul
was preaching late
into the night. The
service was being
held on the third floor
ofahouseinTroas,
Turkey. Needing some
fresh air to combat
drowsiness, Eutychus
sat on the nearest win
dow sill. He drifted off
to sleep and plunged
three stories to the
gation began singing the
closing hymn. This startled the
sleeping individual, who quick
ly stood up holding the song
book. After the benediction, the
sleeper turned to me and said,
“It was a good sermon, wasn’t
it Billy?” After David, Bill and I
returned to the car, we almost
died laughing.
My spirit-filled friend, Rev.
Mervin Watford, pastor of the
Chamlee Memorial Baptist
Church, told me his first
preaching job was at a church
near Columbus, Georgia. A
man in his congregation always
slept during the sermon and
would snore loudly. After fall
ing asleep, the man would tilt
his head backward and begin
snoring. A lady in the church
decided she would stop his
noisy snoring. As soon as the
snoring man drifted off to sleep
and tilted his head backward,
the lady sitting behind him took
a plug of tobacco and dropped
it into his mouth. The startled,
gasping snorer began to spit
and sputter until he expelled
ground. The attendees
rushed down. They considered
him dead. Then Paul came
down, He took Eutychus into
his arms and said, “Don’t be
alarmed. He is still alive.” Since
Eutychus “was taken up dead,”
it was through the providence
of God that young man was
restored to life.
Some individuals sleep in
church because of a medical
condition; others for differ
ent reasons. If a minister is
long-winded, he should develop
a sermon that considers both
clock time and psychological
time. Several times in my life,
I have experienced the Holy
Spirit descend on a congre
gation. No one would want to
sleep through that unforget
table, galvanizing experience.
Jesus promised, “Where two or
three are gathered together in
My name, I will be there with
them.”

Of all the daring feats of
“raid and rescue; the seem
ingly impossible flight of an
Israeli Commando team from
their homeland to the city of
Entebbe, Uganda, on July
4,1976, is unprecedented in
terms of danger and distance!
The drama began to unfold on
June 27, as a party of two Ger
man terrorists (one a wom
an); and two Arabs; comman
deered an Air France Airbus
to Athens; as it landed briefly
on a flight from Tel Aviv to
Paris. Eight minutes after
takeoff, they produced guns
and grenades; and forced the
place, with it’s 245 passengers
(mostly Israelis) to divert to
Entebbe; in the domain of an
imalistic dicta
tor Ida Amin.
His troops

joined in
watching over
the hostages.
Twenty five
hundred miles
away in Israel,
the nation
was incensed
with such
an act; and military leaders
under the command of Major
general Dan Shamron, began
planning for a mission, which
to the ordinary mind, was
unthinkable. How would it
be possible to gain entrance
to a nation so tar away, and
have any reasonable success

choice but to retaliate.
There would be four aircraft
involved; one Being
707, which would
monitor the airport
from 13,000 feet,
and three C-130
Hercules Transports
to effect the landing,
shrouded by dark
ness. The first C-130,
with a black Mer
cedes Sedan (sim
ilar to Ida Amin’s
usual transporta
tion) would be the
first to land. This
time the Mercedes
would be packed with Israeli
paratroopers, armed with
sophisticated weapons. The
other two aircraft would
follow close behind with two
Landrovers, similarly armed.
The Landrovers would follow
the Mercedes on it’s approach
to the terminal; taking the
terrorists and Ugandan force
by surprise.
Challenged by the airport
guards (who were quickly tak
en out); the Israelis charged
rapidly into the Airport Hall.
Sharpshooters startled the
terrorists, and in just fifty
three minutes, the first plane
carrying hostages, was on it’s
way out of the country. Four
hostages died in the cross fire
(and aftermath); along with
the terrorists and many Ugan
dan soldiers.
The first plan to leave also
carried the body of LCOL
Jonathon Netanyahu (Yoni),
immediate commander of the
raid; who was shot in the back
by a sniper as he approached
the the battle zone, he would
be the only Israeli casualty of
the raid; and he would be long
remembered as a hero in the
fight against terrorism. A spe
cial Institute was established
in his honor, to combat this
growing international prob
lem. (Brother Benjamin Ne
tanyahu would later become
Prime Minister of Israel.)
History informs us that not
all missions similar to En
tebbe have ended in success,
but there are circumstances
when such action is deemed
absolutely necessary. In retro
spect, two things are certain.
The first is that the world
will most certainly be faced
with a repeat performance of
hijacking, and taking of hos
tages. Secondly, there can be
no sensible negotiations with
such criminals. Israel proved
their “mettle” at Entebbe; and
illustrated the possibilities
of sophisticated interdiction
of terrorists and their ploys!
The civil world applauds this
exhibition of courage and
professionalism!
