The English embassy is going to give
Mrs. Adams a splendid ball on New-
Year's day evening. Some ot the brightest
beauties of the age will be present. It
will a bene plus ultra ofsplendo 3The
Vice President has arrived. He looks
remarkable well, and has quite recovered
from his severe sickness.
What can the female world ol New-
York conbribute m the shape ol bright
eyes, smiling cheeks, lovely faces, palpit
ating bosom of snow, and iove-iuspiring
little feet, and delicate ancles to the
great Jackson inauguration ball? Adieu.
From the Columbus Enquirer.
It is not yet known who are to be
Gen. Jackson‘B cabiiiet. Mr. Living
ston, and Mr. Van Buren are spoken
of for the State Department. We
have no choice between them. For
the Navy Department, Mr. Wood
berry. We know nothing of him.
For the Treasary Department Mr.
Tazewell, Mr. Ciiecves, and Gen.
Barnard. The first es these stands
high in Congress—the second is dis
tinguished for his abilities as a finan
cier, and the last we know very little
about. For the War Department,
Gov. Cass, Mr. Benton and Col.
Drayton. The two first are advanta
geously known to the public—Col.
Drayton was recommended by Gen.
Jackson to that appointment, when
Mr. Monroe went into office. We
have strong objections to him. one of
which is his iatitudinary constriction
of the constitution. Jtle maintains
that Congress has the right to appro
priate the national funds to works of
internal Improvement, with the con
sent of the State in which the works
are to be carried on. For Attomvy
General, Mr. Berrien and Mr. P. P.
Barbour. We all know something of
the former gentleman, being one of
our Senators io Congress—the latter
has presided with dignity as Speaker
of the House of Representatives, and
his brother, we believe, to James Bar
bour, so infamously celebrated for his
hostility to the rights of Georgia.
Many of our citizens feel that our I
S?ate would be a little flattered by the
appointment of Mr. Berrien, but we!
are not one of the number, not that
we should be much opposed to the ap
pointment, for his legal acquirements’
anil his ability at public speaking,
amply qualify him for the place, but |
we cannot consider it as any great j
compliment to our State, that one of
her citizens should fill a secondary
office in the Cabinet whilst the tran
scendent talents, and Roman virtues
of Governor Troup, should be over
looked and disregarded, because he
will not flatter and purchase nffi e, at
the price of principle. He is the man
who should be at the head of our na
tional affairs, and he will yet be pla
ced there if the unbending honesty of
a true republican should ever again
be duly appreciated by the American
people. Someone has justly said
that he is a Roman in features and a
Homan in soul, and yet the man who
is of all others that we know, the best
qualified for the highest office in our
government, will in all probability
never be once thought of when the ca
binet appointments are made—And
why is the worth of such a man over
looked? because he cannot
